The most common observation I have made on the interwebs is about people claiming the S85 to be F1 derived (big LOL) and the possibly the best BMW engine ever. I don't think people know what they're talking about. Yes it produces 100hp/L but it's not exactly a Judd V8, or a Porsche V10 for that matter. For an engine company like BMW, I expected a lot more. The decision to put this engine in production seems like an engineering exercise, akin to VW's effort of dropping W8 into Passat. Oh I'm sorry, it is not a production engine because it was designed for one car only, and it happens to be a big fat pig. What a shame...
BMW should have celebrated the work of Paul Rosche (retired in 99) by giving us an updated version of S70/2. Instead, they decided to commemorate their play in F1, which by the way was an utter disaster and forced BMW to eventually quit. Heck, even the French with their silly cyan cars were beating BMW.
Finally, why do Americans prefer stick over SMG? SMG > manual and DCT is >> SMG + manual combined. I cannot conceive the brain of the man who thinks otherwise.
