A member over on M3forum.net has been compiling production statistics for M3's of the various body styles based on a script that pulls data from a BMW ETK database. I asked him to pull the same data for E39 M5s, some of you may find it of interest. For me it explains why it is challenging to find an Alpine/extended caramel interior M5. Here is what he has so far (data still needs some vetting):

based on the amount and rate of new threads for these things being parted out, i would guess there are almost none left lol. The quickest way to get rid of one is to let your kid take it for a spin.
Half the guys on bimmerforums have the m5 diff in their 540 and you know the m5 donor car owner didnt sell the diff cuz he still needed it.
i was talking to an auction guy and he said most of the insurance auctioned m5's get sent to the middle east. They go for something close to the price of gold over there. They are actually worth more in pieces than alive. So we only get to see a fraction of the parted out cars. Only those that the owner chose not to take the insurance payout. And i suspect most would do the pay out thing.
I let him know about the count issue, he said the table was off by one column and updated it on his bimmerforums thread. I'll link it over later today.
You'd have to make assumptions on attrition. I'd have no idea what a reasonable rate would be now as we approach 10 years since the last E39s were sold. 10-20%?
I was a bit surprised by the low alpine white numbers. It is a fairly common color in M3s so I was expecting the same when I started searching for an E39.
Only 22 imolas? More Silverstones than Anthracites? Is t hat by year or total? M5board then houses a huge percentage of the Imola population (I can think of 3 off the top of my head)
Yes, it is a matrix of Exterior/Interior combinations so you can see the total number of any given exterior color, interior color, or combination of the two (e.g. I was looking for an AW on extended nappa caramel, but with 14 sold I have a slim chance).
Yup. Vertical = exterior. Horizontal = interior. Match up your exterior with the interior and the number gives you the total production run in that combo. If you just want overall run for a specific exterior or interior, just look at where the "total" box corresponds to it.
Where is this data coming from?
People have mentioned on here it takes BMW 15 years after a chassis has been out of production for them to publish the info.
So I presume the "E" prefacing the Leather on the columns is for extended? So there is only 1 "Extended Leather" Chiaretto with Caramel? I was told mine has "extended leather" but I cant believe its the only 1 equipped as such. How do I verify? I have the build code for the interior but was unable to verify that against anything.
They are probably from the so called ASAP system. EU regulations require manufacturers to hand out spec sheets and the EU login can be used by non-EU IPs as well.
It must be excellent to have a script that does this automatically! I pulled the specs on all M5s made (E28, E34, E39, E60 and F10) manually hmmm What a PITA job it was ouich
However stats like this are extremely interesting I think. Don't know if your friend checked this, but we also nailed it down to specific options (numbers ordered and total order percentage): www.m5portal.com

^or Laguna Seca! In fact, I'm looking to add an Imola Red E46 M3 daily in the Spring to match the M5. What an epic pair that would be: two of the best driving machines known to man, ever. I think that's my definition of heaven.
I found one of the two Anthracite on English Green complete heritage leather cars for sale locally yesterday. I now see why only two were ordered. That green is tough, particularly on anthracite.
One owner, recent trade-in at the dealer they originally purchased it from, 97k miles on it. I could live with it being a 5/2000 car (radio and lights are an easy swap), exterior was clean, but the interior color is too much. Search continues, oh well.

Now I know for certain that I have the most produced color and the most produced interior combo. Facts and figures have stuck again.
Just because I share the same color as every Honda daily driver who NEVER washes his/her car......
Long Live TiSi! Eat our dust....clean looking cars no matter what.. :M5thumbs:
Pollen...What pollen?
Dust after sitting out side..What dust?
Not all the waxed buffed off...What wax? Oh, that dull spot? Invisible on the hwy as it is just another four door
Now get back to fighting about exterior / interior color combos :M5eyes:
If your looking at your code you can determine that for you on the color then we can piece it together. I forget if you have the sport seats with the inserts or heritage I thought the heritage. Do you show either of the following codes on your sheet?
