A member over on M3forum.net has been compiling production statistics for M3's of the various body styles based on a script that pulls data from a BMW ETK database. I asked him to pull the same data for E39 M5s, some of you may find it of interest. For me it explains why it is challenging to find an Alpine/extended caramel interior M5. Here is what he has so far (data still needs some vetting):

Thanks guys! So would 05SW correspond to E/Nap/Schwartz? That would seem to suggest 1 in 25. Surprised so rare if the case.

#48 ·
Do you Sport Leather with the Leather dash? 05SW is the either Nap/Schwartz or E/Schwartz, so either it is 1/134 or 1/164 respectively. The E/Nap/Schwartz is (M1SW) is the Extended Heritage (luxury) Leather

No leather dash -- I read somewhere US didn't get that after 2000 model year. Looking at the VIN printout, I have this option listed:

S776A - Indiv. Roof Lining Alcantara Anthracite

So just curious, whats the difference between "imola rot" and "extended imola rot" a...just different names pre and post-facelift, but otherwise they are the same interior are they not?

That was going to be my next question haha. Before I got my 01 LMB/ LMB , I looked at a 2000 MY, that was black on black with extended leather and it had a full leather dash.. My 2001 MY with extended leather does not have a leather dash.. I was getting worried that someone wrecked this car and didn't put a leather dash back in haha. Well, good to know that the extended leather option past MY2000 didn't come leather.

What did the extended leather package past MY2000 come with then??
My 01 with the full leather (vertical sticthing on seats) had the leather dash. But I think "extended leather" with the seats pictured below should have vinyl after '01:

So after '01 these seats came with vinyl dash and leather only for seats and door inserts

And after '01 these seats came with leather dash/door cards, etc...

I think that is correct, per my research. '00 the seats were not a 100% indicator either way.

Looks like my Avus Blue and Silverstone are 1 of 18. I knew I liked it for a reason.

Still not sure how to read the M5Portal statistics:
Oxford Green Metallic II (430) -132
Caramel Interior (M3CR) - 228

#63 ·
Oxford Green Metallic II (430) -132 - Total number Produced (DE93)
Caramel Interior (M3CR) - 228 - Total number Produced (DE93)
So your ride is 1 of 21 produced for the North American Market (DE93)

Looks like 1 of 164, Chris.
Thanks. Will go with this unless proven otherwise. Not too shabby.

My M3 beats it though. One of only 250 Fern greens sold in NA.

^ I saw a Fern Green E36 M3 a couple months ago at a meet. Color is amazing!

Thanks. I've never seen an Oxford, would be fun. Some local owners have gotten together at Fair Oaks Mall, keep an eye out for that.

Did you see that a 2000 Oxford/Caramel was just sold in the For Sale forum?

Yeah I go to the Fair Lakes meet every Sunday. That's actually where i saw the Fern Green E36 M3. You should come out this weekend :M5thumbs: Check the regional thread, I started a thread for the cars & coffee meet there.

Was thinking about this at TF and seeing the variety of cars with different interiors. Looking at the data above, I am pretty sure the left side is "complete" interiors, while the right side is all "extended." Based on the below, from Mregistry, for US (DE93), for black and caramel the "extended" interiors are cars with luxury heritage seats, but without full leather (M3SW/M3CR). These were solely MY2000 cars.

The MY2001-2003 luxury seats (black (M1SW) or caramel (M1CR)) should all be mated with matching full leather doors, dashboard, etc. These are the "complete" leather cars.

Now for the assumption, keeping the above in mind and reasoning the production numbers (one production year 00, vice three from 01-03), the left side of the overall chart appears to be all "complete" cars (full leather, regardless of sport/lux seats) while the right half (E/*) shows "extended" (not full leather, regardless of sport/lux seats). The two-tone sports seats are less obvious with apparently differing rules/production timelines, but I suspect pretty much all, at least post 2000 US cars, are "extended" leather cars and do not have a full leather dash.

If still skeptical, you can find out exactly what interior you have, or at least the one your car came with, through a VIN decoder. I use rubmw.ru/vincode/eng/ - it does require registration and is in Russian but is quite informative. Mine is M1CR "complete" caramel leather and holds true with the above.

Yes, that is how it works. You can compare to the interior stats at M5portal and see what interior is what. They dont match up perfectly, but its close enough.

If I read the chart correctly I have 1 of 13 Le Mans Blue with Extended Napa Caramel combos. Cool!
Unfortunately I think that chart has M1CR and M3CR mixed up. If your car is an 01-03, I think its 1 of 193.

You really have to reference these as well to figure out what is going on because that chart is either incorrect or its hard to tell what his abbreviations mean quite often.

You mean S785A "white direction indicator lights"? If so, it's just clear turn signal lenses?

I am SOOO Glad I came across this post!!!! It showed me that I have the 5th of 5 Dakar Yellow E39 M5s!!!! Excited to learn this; I knew it was rare, but now have confirmed that this is correct; last one shipped to the USA (produced on 4/5/2002)

Now I need to spend some time to determine the difference of the interior between us 5 and break it down even more.

Now...who wants to help me pick out a custom license plate for my Bumble Beast (only have 7 spaces on plate)?

Awesome man! I've seen pictures of your Dakar, stunning. Real question is, how many Dakar still exist?

Not sure what your plate should be, but I think leaving off the "M5" will help, we all know it's an M5!
