Well I bet that got your attention!

I followed up on a lead from bimmer.org about accessing a status screen - not only does it work, but there is some really fun info there!

How would you like to know your latitude and longitude? The direction of net G-force according to the gyro? (Did you even know the M5 has a gyro in it?) Your instantaneous speed at any time in meters per second? How would you like to know the hardware and software versions of every system component?

You can see all this and more. Here's how:

1)Buy an M5

2)Turn the key on (engine running/moving is OK, not required)

3) Press Menu, then Set to enter the Settings screen.

4) Press-hold the menu button. The display will instantly change back to the menu screen, but keep holding the menu button in for about 15 seconds and you'll get to the Status screen. There are several options there, including "Telematics" which probably only applies if you have the phone option, and Video System which only applies if you have the European model which allows you to watch TV.

5) The cool stuff is under "GPS" and "Sensors". Once you get to the GPS screen, you choose "Function" to see "tracking info" which will tell you which satellites the GPS is watching at the moment, and how many. Another function shows you the GPS status - lat, lon, speed, etc. It has a spot for Altitude but mine always read 0. Speed is in meters/sec - I believe if you multiply this number by 2.24 you should get MPH. (Would some physicist please check my work!)

6) Under "Sensors" is a really cool little icon that shows you what the gyro is feeling. This screen also reports a single number called "Wheel Sensors" the number was roughly 400 @ 40mph, roughly 300 @ 30 mph. Could this be wheel revolutions per sec?

Anyway - there is a lot of really cool info here - enjoy - but please keep your eyes on the road!

I checked this out and one of the settings said my car was a 7er. I didn't like to change the settings though.

But it's still cool anyway.

I've found another 'Gadget' too - or should that read 'Gadget 3'.

Press the two buttons together on the speedo dials - wait a few seconds and the digital display reads 'Test Number 01'. If you keep pressing the right button, it scrolls through about 20 tests. When you get to the desired test number, press the other button, which acts as the enter key. I only tried test number 2, which makes every light on the speedo display light up, the speedo and rev counter needles go right around and it looks pretty neat. If my digital camera wasn't broken, I'd take a picture to show you.

I didn't try any others, as I was worried I might do some damage. If anyone does try the others, please don't blame me if something goes wrong - I was only fiddling too!! Oh, by the way, my car is a UK spec, so the buttons may be reversed on the left hand drive models.

Rtorre - Gadget Freaks 1 is posted on this board - re: G-Tech.

Mark - Yeah, I had heard about those but share your caution. I do believe there are ways to gete in trouble. I think there is also a lot of interesting info there - if someone knows how to snoop without getting in trouble.....

As promised, here are the instructions on how to get to the "Test Modes" of the OBC. I didn't run into any trouble, but as always, do this at your own risk :) BMW apparently doesn't want you to play with this, so most modes are locked. Once you unlock them, they remain unlocked, until you bring in your car for service, or explicitly lock them yourself.

UNLOCK PROCEDURE:

1) Key to ignition pos 2 (no need to start engine).
2) Fasten the seat belt to get rid of the "Fasten Seat Belt" message.
3) Press the right button on the instrument panel, and hold it until "TEST-NR. 01" comes up (5 to 10 seconds).
4) Press the left button on the instrument panel, and the vehicle id comes up (last 7 digits of VIN).
5) Add up the last 5 digits to get the "unlock code", e.g. the unlock code for "AB12345" would be 15 (1+2+3+4+5).
6) Repeatedly press the right button until "TEST-NR. 19" appears.
7) Press left button -> "LOCK : ON"
8) Repeatedly press left button until "LOCK : xx" appears, where "xx" is your unlock code.
9. Press the right button. All modes are unlocked now.

NAVIGATING BETWEEN TESTS AND PERFORMING THEM:

- Follow steps 1) to 3) of the "UNLOCK PROCEDURE" to enter test mode.
- Use the right button to step from test to test.
- Press the left button to enter a test and cycle between modes within a test.
- Press and hold the right button to exit test mode (turning the key to 0 works as well).

Here is what I know about the various test modes:

2) Instrument test: Cute light show in the instrument panel. Ever wanted to see the speedo show 190 without having to leave the garage?

3) Don't know.

4) Current fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers and in liters per hour.

5) Average fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers and range.

6) Current fuel levels in left tank, right tank, and total.

7) Engine temperature (not sure where measured), engine RPM, and outside temperature.

8) Current speed in kilometers per hour.

9) Battery voltage.

10) Country.

11) Don't know.

12) Not sure what these are. Could be average speed used to calculate arrival time for distance to destination set in OBC?

13) Sound test. Goes through the various gong sounds.

14) Don't know. Could be some diagnostic codes.

15) DOn't know. Looks like a real-time readout of some registers.

16) Oil temperature. I sometimes get a bogus -48 degrees C when the engine is not running. Corrects itself when the engine is on.

17) Don't know.

18) Doesn't do anything.

19) Locking & unlocking of the test modes.

20) Don't know.

21) Don't know. This test asks you "RESET?". Let me know what it does, if you're brave enough to try it. I'd recommend to stay clear, though.

Have fun.

This is FUN!

One usfull setting is the brightness of the Nav display... apparently the default is half the brightness..

As for Telematic, i think it has to do with the ability to send the details (location coords, plat #, VIN, color, etc), via SMS (GSM mobiole network) for roadside assistance... You can actually input all this info, including the roadside-assistance phone number (the default is a +41 number).. probably usless in the US but cool.

The display that shows the Gyro setting is also cool, if you want to see how tight your turns are...

I'll continue playing and let you know...

robert47, as a side thought, when reading through the occupation list, it becomes obvious that the majority of m5 owners is closely related to engineering and high tech industries, id think that in other countries there would be the same trend.

This thread is certainly one of my many favourites on this board.

Having recently purchased a menu locked E39 M5, I searched for an E39 M5 specific unlock video yet couldn't find one thus I made one in honour of this thread. I hope that it helps someone who likes videos as much as I do. hiha

Just for the sake of convenience and after searching, I didn't find one. I have attached a PDF file for the E39 M5 "Secret Menu" access and usage. If I have missed anything or need additions, please PM me and I will update it. Enjoy.

Test-21 "Reset"
This resets the cluster. So, the Trip odometer will be reset, if you did "Test-02" and got stuck with the car icon it to will be reset, as will the OBC testmenu to a locked state. That is what "Test-21" does.

The 14-year old, short but legendary thread. I remember stumbling across this not long after picking up my Beast in 7/02. We've shared 215000 miles since then, and so, of course, I too have ended up right back here every other year or so, though now really just for nostalgia... after the first hundred unlocks and menu-playing adventures, my fingers can bring up 06 automatically when I have to nurse the vapors. hiha
