Oil Cooler Installation

So I finally finished the installation of my oil cooler setup. I used the 540i "Gulf" oil filter housing (with the part number ending in 171) that has outs for an oil cooler, a 16-row Setrab oil cooler mounted with Setrab brackets behind the kidneys with M22 to An -10 Setrab adaptors, 26 x1.5 mm to AN -10 adaptors for the housing, and XRP HS-79 hosing with 90 degree hose ends for the the oil cooler and straight ends for the oil filter housing. I had to trim the backs of my kidney grills to make room for the cooler and to permit the hood to latch completely.

As you will see from the pics, I had to relocate the oil filter housing to make room for the oil cooler outs. Essentially, I just swapped spots with the power steering reservoir and then bent the existing bracket a bit. Eventually, I'll get a custom bracket that will look better and be a little sturdier, but this does the job for now. At first, I installed the 26mm to AN -10 adaptors to the oil filter housing without o-rings, and it leaked. Subsequently, I put some very tight aftermarket o-rings around the adaptors and coated them in synthetic white grease. That eliminated the leaks.

Ran the setup pretty hard today in 80 degree weather (unseasonably warm in Richmond today), and oil temp never budged past 210 degrees. Here are the pics.

I know, I had a hard time making myself do this now that Winter is almost upon us, but I had the housing sitting around for a bit and spent the money on the hosing and identified the right adapters, so I told myself I should go ahead and finish it. I did run the car without the under plenum oil heat exchanger for two weeks, however, in 50-60 degree weather without the oil temps exceeding 212-213 degrees. In short, the absence of the under plenum heat exchanger didn't seem to make much of a difference when it was cool outside. It will be great to see the effects of this setup when it is hot outside, both in terms of cooler oil temperatures and less heatsoak.

Peter,

Thanks for taking the time to write this up. I am going to take full advantage of the research that you did and that I was NOT looking forward to doing myself. It makes this mod seem much more of a possibility and I hadn't even heard of Setrab before and that they make brackets is a great find. I am removing my intake plenum and valve covers this winter anyway so I think that will a perfect time to install the block-off kit and complete this mod.

I was wondering if you could take the time for a few requests: can you take some pictures of the modified grilles and what were the approximate lengths of hoses you needed for that cooler location. Also, what made you choose the location you did? I believe some choose the lower position around the brake-duct region.

Thank you again! Looks great.

Happy to help. Jerry (Gsfent) and David (T-Trim540) helped out tremendously in identifying the oil housing and part numbers, etc. I bought the Setrab instead of the Mocal principally because it came with brackets that looked like they would fit perfectly. I chose the behind-the-kidneys location because my lower grill area is used up with the air-to-water heat exchanger for my SCer intercooler. I just trimmed the bottom half of the grills by about 1/2" to keep them from running into the oil cooler. Also, you have to remove the rubber kidney "hood" in its entirety to make room. For that location, using the "Gulf" oil filter housing, I used one 40" length of hose and one 50" length, each with a 90 degree fitting on one end and a straight fitting on the other, AN -10 size hose.

Good luck with the installation.

More great stuff emerging from "Peter's Garage" Quite a productive weekend! Really top drawer look/install

Now you need some background photos of your sandal-clad feet to complete the ascent to DIY Stud.. ;)

LOL! Indeed, and with dirty feet and long toenails to boot!

Thanks! I was a bit disappointed that I scraped the anodizing on the housing and hose connectors when I tightened them, but it was unavoidable. Very tight space, and the factory oil lines are VERY difficult to work with.

Congrats Peter. Nice to see that everything is coming together. And thanks for sharing.

That seems to be the experience of others. Peter was even kind enough to give you the specs for adapter to convert the two extra fittings to -AN. It couldn't be easier, really. You just have to find a place to put the cooler.

Haha! I've had my good digital camera for a while, I just didn't have it for my brake installation.

Still have to eradicate my E6 code. I think my throttle linkage is hitting the underside of my plenum. Once that is fixed, then it is just the meth system installation and performance wise, the car should be at it's peak!

Setrab Oil Cooler

I too am doing the same install this week. I was lucky enough to find the "last" gulf oil filter housing in the US. It seems this part has been discontinued. I will post pics when done as well.

I got my oil filter housing on order, actually two. I don't know why two. Three BMW dealers told me that although it did not say discontinued or no longer available (maybe yet?) the system showed no housings in the US (as said before) but there are 17 in Germany.
I think I am going to get my fittings from here. I haven't done too much research yet on other sources, though.

That's interesting. I originally ordered my housing from Pelican Parts. Shortly after the order was placed they contacted me saying;

"Unfortunately, we recently discovered that one or more of the parts you ordered are No Longer Available (NLA). These are:

11-42-7-511-171-BOE Genuine BMW Part: OIL FILTER COMP***NLA"

I guess they were incorrect in that statement. It sounds like the inverntory in Germany will be depleted in the near future.

My install is doine. I will pickup the car this evening and post pics tomorrow.cherrsagai

Well, it would seem that M5 owners may have single-handedly depleted the US of the required oil filter housing (exacerbated by the apparent discontinuation by BMW) and Pegasus Auto Racing's stock of the desired adapters. Unless this is all a coincidence?

I'm really sorry to hear this, but not at all surprised. When I identified this as an alternative to the Dinan oil cooler setup, a number of others on the board and otherwise already had gone this route. Thus, I was very surprised that I was able to source the housing through my local dealer in a couple of days. I think they just happened to have one in stock. I would think you would be able to source one through someone who has good contacts with European dealerships (e.g., Mike a/k/a E55AMG2?). As for the adapters, they apparently are used to adapt stainless lines to Porsche oil coolers and so I suspect will become available again from Pegasus or otherwise.

Good luck!

Fortunately, if you can get your local dealership to take an extra step and check they will see that there are some in stock in Germany and they can still be ordered and then shipped from there. If stock will ever be replenished or a replacement number be issued, I do not know. I am not too worried about the adapters as I am also sure that they will become available.

Pics of my install

As promised all, here are a few shots of the install that Mike O'Neill of Northeast Motorsports did for me on Monday. He fabricated two brackets, one for the oil filter housing and the other for the power steering resivior. I am quite happy with the install.

Looks good, but why the bracket to raise up the oil filter housing? Why not just run the lines to the oil cooler below the power steering reservoir?
Regards,
Jerry

I believe the increase is a quart and 1/2.

Thanks Peter for the picture and help! Now I have ordered:

22 x 1.5mm to 10AN Male Adapter for Setrab Oil Coolers, Alum
#10 Size Stainless Steel Braided Racing Hose
Straight Alum. #10 Hose End / 10AN and Aluminum #10 Hose End / 10AN
Male 26 x 1.5mm Metric Concave Seat to 10AN Male, Aluminum

Now I'm just waiting for the oil housing to come from germany. Also, will a 19 row setrab cooler be to much? I can get one locally pretty cheap

I used a 16-row, but a 19-row should fit. T-Trim540 installed a 19-row, I think.

Good luck!

Mikeowski, good looking installation! I suspect they moved the oil filter housing up in order to make room for the oil cooler lines. I thought about putting mine there, but was worried it would interfere with my hood closing, so I swapped positions with the power steering tank and bent the bracket a bit to accommodate the oil filter housing. The factory lines between the block and the oil filter housing are tight and hard to work with.

Are you referring to the Setrab or the Gulf Oil filter housing? The Setrab prices can be seen here: Setrab Oil Coolers

The oil filter housing is around $350.

Looks like the stealer stole $200 from you. Peter and I have been successful with the 16 row. If you use the bracket Setrab makes and mount it like we did, you may not have air flow over the 3 additional rows. Just something to think about.
