I have seen a lot of posts about people having trouble adding oil to their car. It seems like there are varying opinions on when to add and how much to add. So, I wanted to get some opinions what has worked for some of you.

Very simple. When it asks for oil, it is at minimum oil level for normal operation. It asks for 1L. You put in (1) 1 liter bottle. YOU ARE DONE!! Very simple, No guessing , No waiting for measurements. People who fill up 1/2 liter then wait are just wasting time and creating stress for themselves trying to "guesstimate" when there is no need to. Between 0.0L -1.0L the car operates normally and fine.
The oil measurement is above minimum operating level. Not total oil level ouich LOL Just wait til the car asks for oil, and give it what it asks for. :biggrinbounce:

Yup.

Been saying that since 2006.

Can't see why there's still a confusion...:confused2

Even if you don't follow the forum, that's what the owner's manual says to do...ouich

I guess BMW made it too easy...

There is no "reset" for the system.

The manual actually says:

"For immediate updating of the oil level display, carry out a quick measurement directly afterward."

And even that is not necessary if you follow the procedure in the manual for when to add oil.

I would say to have your car's software &oil level sensors checked out if you are only adding 1L of oil when it asks for 1L and you are getting a overfill reading. Remember to wait until you get a 0.0L reading plus the add oil request before you add the 1.0 L. Doing this as requested by the owner's manual has always yielded perfect results for me. If it does not work for you following that EXACT procedure get your car checked out.

BMW service advisor advised doing 0.5L and waiting before adding 0.5L to avoid going over max. My experience is that the add oil comes on reliably at 0.2L, and if I add 0.5L, it reads 0.7L after a day or two. I'd guess it would go over the MAX line if I added a full 1L, and I'd assume that that is still well within tolerance based on the experience of other board members. The SA just doesn't want owners running in worried that they are over max.

Many BMW service advisor lack even a basic knowledge of this car. Ignore the SA, follow the manual. This is brainless and is intended to be. As stated above, add one full bottle of oil (not more, not less) when the car tells you to (not before and not after). Always a good idea to keep an extra bottle in the trunk. Be patient: let the system reset itself in its own time. Once you put the oil in, there is really no need to look at the meter until the car notifies you again. I have not heard of any board members who followed this properly and had a problem.

I've seen so many posts regarding the proper way to add oil and they seem to be overly complex. Its exactly as AndrewSherman mentions. Wait until the car tells you to add oil, then add what it tells you.

I wonder if some people fill up their gas tank halfway, wait for the gauge to reset then fill it up the rest of the way.:dunno::biggrin:

LMAO!.

It is understandable though. There is probably a significant over-representation of Type-A personalities on this board (I happen to be about as A as you can get without actual being a dictator of a small country). A Types have some issues relegating control.

Isn't that why we all turn off our DSC?:hihi:

I am originally from MA, but have been in New York for a couple of decades. Thankfully, that I have also not totalled my M5!:eek7:

From reading all the threads on oil, there appears to be a variation in the oil sensor performance among cars that generates angst for some owners. My guess is that BMW would have issued a recall/service notice if adding 1L of oil when the car told you to actually could cause damage, and that the operating tolerance is well above and below the max/min lines.

However, I'd rather not trigger the max oil warning. My oil sensor has issued an "add oil" warning at 0.2L at the last two warnings, not 0.0L. Since the oil sensor reliably increments the amount I put in within a day (0.2 + 0.5 = 0.7), I don't push it past the max line. Would it cause the max oil warning to come on if I added 1L? Not sure. While it may do no harm in reality, I'd rather not have the max oil warning come on and sit waiting to be an excuse to deny warranty coverage or some other idiocy.

So I have to fill my oil a couple extra times a year. NBD.

The first warning to add oil comes on at 0.2L.

And the same warnings subsequent of 0.2L through 0.0L.

The absolute warning to add oil comes on at -0.1L.

The dispay has a different warning message at -0.1L than at the warning at 0.2L.

IIRC, it warns to add oil within a certain amount of miles (or else your engine will explode, I added this ).

I've always found it best to add oil at 0.0.

Remember, the oil display reads the amount of oil above the minimum operating level.

The manual says the engine oil capacity (with oil filter change) is 9.25L (*). This is 1.0L on the display.

(*The BMW TIS and Owner's manual state an engine oil capacity specification of 9.3L with filter.)

So at 0.0L on the display, that's 8.25L engine oil capcity.

8.25L is the minimum level to operate the M5 safely.

So at the absolute warning at -0.1L, that's 8.15L.

BMW seriously warns not to go below this level at all.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
