weird 'click' noise from rear

Hi guys, I've had this annoying problem for a while and I did search however I only found this issue associated with e39 m5's.

Basically, when I move off from a stand still I get a metallic 'click' sound. It is rather annoying, I have had the diff oil changed but the noise remains. I have check suspension and the rear arms have also been changed for genuine bmw items.

Can anyone recommend where I can look?

Are you talking about taking off in a straight line? If you are turning, the diff can make some noise and there is a bulletin on it. If it is a straight line, don't have a clue.

Keep us posted.

Can you take/make a video clip?

I have replaced my rear pads to eliminate this problem but it still remains :(

I did try and take a video but you cannot hear it due to the exhaust, the best way I can describe the sound is like flicking a hollow pipe, it actually happens when moving from a stationary position either towards or backwards and sometimes even turning left and right.

I have checked the diff oil which BMW supplied to me and it doesn't seem to be the same as the upgraded one which is in the service bulletin, not too sure how much difference this will make as it's not a grinding noise I am experiencing??

no i am a 6speed and there is a click noise whenever i put first and press the gas at the beginning when the car moves forward and when i remove my foot of the gas i hear a click again as well.
so not only smg

Does the click happens when you move forward, backwards, of both? Does the click happens every time, or after it happened once, does not happen again until you restart?

Can you try with the sunroof open?

Lots of people have the little wind deflector bar slightly bounce against the metal pane of the glass and it makes an oddly hollow metallic noise.

It happens to me whenever I shut my door, go over uneven pavement, etc. any sudden jarring of the chassis can cause this. Most people just put some felt or the soft side of stick on Velcro on one of the two pieces to cushion and eliminate the noise.

Got same sound coming from rear, like a tink sound like something is loose.
When I jack the rear wheels of ground and rock the wheels I get the same sound but seems to come from diff and prop shaft connection.
Strange thing is when start the engine and drive the wheels the sound isn't there?
So it seems it only happens when there is weight involved.
Is it the prop shaft?

its definitely from the rear part of the car

I started having same issue. My diff was changed out to the new fluid already, didn't start noticing this issue until after I did stoptech BBK on rear and even then, didn't start until a couple weeks after.

Rear Left, sounds like a click from stop to moving, once moving no sound
Right Rear, No click from stop, but while driving similar click, click, click if driving slow enough to hear it.

Wheel bearings going bad?

Three out of the 4 nuts taken out came out with no effort, also centre carrier bearing I've taken out also made a ting sound against propshaft, bearing didn't sound smooth when spun.

Sorry for bad pic taken

I wonder when the new parts get put in and all tighten up will the sound go?

Will let you all know

Hi all

Recap on my click/tink metal sound coming from under car when pulling off or reversing from standstill even sometimes when moving slowly

I've swapped out the center support bearing and guibo joint (but when I was taking apart guibo joint some of the bolts spun easily with the nuts still attached - maybe retightening might of solved issue?) And the clicking noise is gone completely.

Also the center support bearing was making slight noise when spinning it and more freely than the new one.

Hope this helps
