So I found a thread that talks about replacing the fog light and bulb but with no pictures. I ordered some newer bulbs just because I wanted something newer/brighter and I thought I'd picture catalog the steps. I figured some of the newer dudes might find this helpful. The swap is very straight forward:

Disclaimer: Any fixing you do on your car is your responsibility and I won't be held liable for any damages incurred.

Step 1. Clean the area around the light with canned or pressurized air. Pry the plastic covering around the light with your hand with emphasis toward the outside of the car. You can use a flathead screw driver but you may end up scratching the plastic covering or paint. It takes some wrist grease and it should just pop out.

Step 2. The area around the light fixture is dirty so I took the chance to clean it and the fixture as well.

Step 3. The screw toward the center is the one you want to loosen with an 8mm attachment.

Step 4. With some minor movements the fog light fixture just comes out.

Step 5. To remove the old light bulb you'll have to twist it out of the fog light fitting and lift the small tab that holds it in place. I found that using a flathead screw driver works best as using your fingers may break the small tab.

Step 6. To remove the bulb takes a bit of prying it out. Placing the newer bulb is a matter of sliding it in until the tab snaps into place holding it there.

Step 7. With the new bulbs in place, slide the fog light fixture back into place making sure to align the tab on the outside properly. The screw hole, so to speak, should line up as well. Screw it back and snap the plastic covering back into place.

Voila! I was happy with the new lights, they're nice, bright, and give off a whiter light  I kept the old ones just in case.

See above post for color and type of bulb.

I didn't replace my headlights/headlight bulbs although I am considering upgrading to AngeliBright V3.0 for my angel eyes.

I fretted about this, but really wanted 50W HID fogs, so I bought the 50W slim-line digital ballast kits from Umnitza. Aside from having to turn on my lights before starting the car to prevent error lights and flickering fogs, I have had no problems with the 50w HID fogs. Others on the board (EMG55?) have had no problems with high wattage HID fogs.

I just replaced my fog light bulbs and would like to add two observations :

Step 1. Clean the area around the light with canned or pressurized air. Pry the plastic covering around the light with your hand with emphasis toward the outside of the car. You can use a flathead screw driver but you may end up scratching the plastic covering or paint. It takes some wrist grease and it should just pop out.
Don't skimp on the cleaning here, clean multiple times as the surround moves, quite a lot of gritty debeis can drop down, it did on mine, and with the tight fit of the plastic in the opening it could scratch the paint if you dont clear it away.

Step 5. To remove the old light bulb you'll have to twist it out of the fog light fitting and lift the small tab that holds it in place. I found that using a flathead screw driver works best as using your fingers may break the small tab.
The tab is on a hinge, press down on the back of the connector, it will lower the tab and the bulb just pulls out.

I got the Umnitza HID kit, 6000k to match my low beams. No errors and no flickering. Had it for over a year now and no issues. These are really bright and I can't imagine 55w being better. I haven't gotten flashed once with these, but they do a great job lighting up the night. You'll be looking for pitch-black roads to enjoy some night driving with these lights.

If you want 55w, then do those to your low beams.

thanks for the write up! I just put in my new fogs last night. I didn't realize how pitted my stock fogs were 'til last night! I actually had to do a little more extra work cause the housings on the new fogs were a lot bigger than the stock ones, so I actually had to take off the bottom plastic cover and install them from the inside and bring them out. The first one was very frustrating to put in, but for some reason the second one just slid in and was easy. I bought the lens protection for these so they should stay pit free!

btw, does anyone know the part # for the plastic cover on the passenger side? Mine is cracked. It also has something plugged into it....anyone know what it's for?

thanks for the write up, tho....helped a lot!

Diny, where can I find this kit? i looked on their site and could not find 6000k fog lights. also do you have a picture of what they look like? Because I am looking to upgrade but do not want annoyingly bright ones.

Awesome DIY, changed my fog bulbs in less than 10 mintutes.

One of mine is always fogged/wet, is this common.
I imagine it's a weak seal in the front lenses?
Can it be pulled appart and resealed or best to just buy another one?

In Australia it's $80? fine for driving with your fog lights on in the day time.
I'd love to know how doing this could be a hazard to other road users....can't be blinded by fogs at anytime, they shoot low....wth

I have the angel ibright v3 angel eyes on my M5 rite now, but i ordered new PIA bulbs to replace the OEM halogen bulbs for the fogs. Im stuck on getting the old bulbs out of the housing after disconnecting them from the fog lite fixture. Can someone please help me out with possibly a technique i could use to get the OEM bulbs out?!

Thanks, Kyle.

Kbaxt, the bulb end slides into the grey housing and it snaps/clicks in place once the small tab moves past a semi-circle opening. You can remove the bulb by pressing down on the clip with the ridges (on the grey housing..as shown in picture #5). basically, just press down on the tab and the bulb should slide out.

ok i thought so i wasnt sure though cause i tried so many times to pull the bulb out of the grey piece but nothing happened. The grey one would wiggle a little but wouldnt come out and the other fog light has a black housing not a grey one and that one doesnt budge at all so after i get my baby back from being repaired (i got rearended :() ill give it a shot.

thanks for the help

Recently bought a M5, and this was the first minor mod I did. I also did not like the yellow fog lights.

I had to replace the plastic inserts, since former owner had cut them out. Went with Phillips Blue Vision H4s, didn't want to go HID. Full details and pics in a blog post: Fog Light Bulb Replacement on the E39 M5 « Work, Wine and Wheels

Hope it helps. Post what bulbs you go with.
