Excel Row Limit - Office 2013

Just curious but what version of Excel are you using? I thought 2010 allows more than 65k row but could be wrong.

messex,

No, you are right on the money. I can't speak for the 2010 version, but Excel in Office 2013 allows for 1,048,576 rows. :greenflag:

Hello AWOL

I was wondering whether you continued your canbus adventure, the thread here stops abruptly. You could be dead, but I want to try staying positive :)
Could tell me what colors on the PDC are for Can + and Can -?
Can I get at it some other place, like the CCC controller?

Cheers

So the first test went not so well.

Apparently the CAN shield and program I was given do not work with the Arduino Mega. The CAN shield has a micro-SD slot for logging, but the pin configuration is different for the Mega Board.

So, I ran off to Radio Shack and picked up an Arduino Uno for $29.99 and problems solved...with the SD card at least.

I was excited and ran out the the car to hook it up and start logging. And guess what? Pre LCI E60s don't have CAN signals at the OBD port...

So, now to figure out an easy access place to tap the CAN bus. So far, I'm thinking the trunk on the PDC module. I might even move the PDC module out of the spare tire well (assuming it's there on the Ms as it is on the non-Ms) as many bimmerforums guys have done to avoid the possibility of a liquid spill in the trunk flooding it.

Will post more when I get it hooked up and some data collected.
Hey Jim,

When you attach to CAN anywhere else than the OBD-II, please make sure you use the proper termination resistance on your transceiver board. A CAN bus is designed as a "backbone" to which participants attach. If you are an endpoint, you need to terminate with 2 x 60 Ohms to ground tied together through a 10 nF capacitor. If you are in the 'middle' of the of the bus (where you typically should be aiming for) you do not terminate. So, be aware of your bus position and try to connect 'in the middle'. Otherwise you cause reflections and you may get signal quality issues.

Now on the throttle actuator CAN bus and VANOS solenoid CAN busses you must connect without termination because it is a point to point high speed CAN bus. There is no middle: you are it with your sniffer. These are the interesting ones in my opinion :wink, especially if you can time align it with logging data. By the way, these particular transceivers are made by Infineon (TLE6250G) running at 1Mbit/s. It is usually best to use the same transceivers in listening mode for best fidelity, but hey it will work with a TJA1043 from NXP as well, I bet. What transceiver is used on the Arduino setup?

I am not sure about the other CAN networks in our cars and their exact data rates. Some high speed networks run at 500kbit/s. So, beware. A cheap scope is useful in such matters. I have one if needed.

The best software and hardware for logging is this: CANalyzer
But it is very expensive. It is what the car companies use as in many cases they run their software on a Vector OS (OSEK based). I looked on eBay, but nothing came up. Surprise surprise. I did not try very hard, I must say. However, say the word and I can drive over with a toolset when the questions get tough!

Remco, glad you chimed in here. This was an experiment that worked well and my eventual goal was to take a spare PDC module and repurpose it to "monitor" the CAN bus as a "pass-through" module of sorts. The location in the rear would provide room to install it and use the bus data to signal other things as desired throughout the car. One of many ideas I never seem to have time/priority to follow through on.

However, looking into DCT retrofit, we need to know exactly what is on the PT-CAN bus will be essential to determine the difference between traffic in SMG vs. DCT.

Here are the bus descriptions BMW has adopted:

Raw (non KOMBI optimized) RPM is buried into K-CAN message ID, bytes 4 and 5 as a 16 bit unsigned integer. K-CAN and PT-CAN message ID are the same. These messages are roughly transmitted at a 100ms average update rate (while on PT-CAN it would be 10ms average). Thanks BMW for making this easy.

True for all ArbIds across PT-CAN, K-CAN, ByteFlight, LLS-CAN, and DK-CAN. ArbIDs are unique and assigned their numbers by priority, so it makes sense to keep the ordering consistent.

I posted this on bimmerforums, but you guys will probably find it helpful too. Found it while digging through tool32

Listing of what a bunch of message IDs are for and which modules they originate from. There are some IDs missing when I check against my 535xi, so the list is incomplete, but it's still much better than flying completely blind.

I posted this on bimmerforums, but you guys will probably find it helpful too. Found it while digging through tool32

Code:

Abbreviated Terra's post above for what I think most are after here.

Hex ArbID for M-Drive is 0x399. Specifically, you can trigger off of byte 1, bit 7-8.

What's probably also of interest to you guys are the transmission messages:

Code:
0xB5	Drehmomentanforderung EGS [9]	Torque demand EGS [9]	0x18	EGS_MECH+NAVI/EGS_MECH
0xB8	Drehmomentanforderung DKG [2]	Torque requirement DKG [2]	0x18	DKG

Only 0xB8 seems to be DCT specific, and only 0xBD and 0x1A3 seems to be SMG specific. 0xB8 and 0xBD both seem to carry torque requirement, though it's unclear as to whether or not the format is the same. 0x3B1 might not be present in SMG transmissions

Next step would be to disassemble the MSS65, find where the CAN messages are handled, and see if there's any code already present to handle the DCT-specific messages.

I was looking at that last night. I am setting up my CAN message simulator. There are multiple choices here. I was thinking byte 4, bits 5 and 4. This is the dashboard M-light part of the message. Either a 01 or a 10 in these bits will indicate the M-drive dash / HUD light being ON. A 00 means OFF. This way it is agnostic of a particular ECU status in the vehicle. This also matches the CAN trace you left somewhere upstream in this thread. You must have been toggling the M button in that experiment, from what I could tell.

@jcolley, do you you have any updates on your project? I'm trying to activate the M steering wheel button on non M E60 model, so if you have any helpful tips for me, I will appreciate them.
Even if you code the steering wheel module to an M5 VO (presumably that's all that's needed), the car still won't know anything about those CAN frames.

Well I have already activated M view in the HUD of my non M E60 so I would like to be able to activate/deactivate that view in the HUD when I press the M button on the steering wheel. Currently I'm able to activate/deactivate that view only from the iDrive settings. I saw that there is M drive option in the SZL module, which I eventually can activate with NSC Expert coding, but I don't know to what else that option may be related and I don't want to cause any issues with it. I was thinking that I can just get the messages, which are sent in the CAN Bus when the M button is pressed and after receiving them to send new messages to the CIC to activate the M view in the HUD. Does that make sense?

Well I have already activated M view in the HUD of my non M E60 so I would like to be able to activate/deactivate that view in the HUD when I press the M button on the steering wheel. Currently I'm able to activate/deactivate that view only from the iDrive settings. I saw that there is M drive option in the SZL module, which I eventually can activate with NSC Expert coding, but I don't know to what else that option may be related and I don't want to cause any issues with it. K-can is set up as a serial bus and every module sees the traffic and ignores stuff it doesn't care about. You won't screw stuff up if you code SZL to start sending the m-mode-on frames (about the only thing I've seen throw stuff off is duplicating 0x380 messages with different vin number).

Odds are CIC will ignore them anyway, until you code it to enable that functionality - I'm not sure if you can enable it by coding to activate the functionality, or recode the whole CIC with a VO that has it. Probably the former though, from my experience the VO stuff doesn't do much.

Either way doing that should be easier than setting up an arduino as a man-in-the-middle type of thing.

Yep, I'm aware how CAN bus works. Probably I wasn't clear in my previous post. I'm afraid to not break anything, which is working ok at the moment. For example my car is equipped with Lane Departure Warning system, which doesn't exist in the M models. That system can be activated/deactivated from the button, which sits below the M button. If I enable the M mode in the SZL, I may lose the ability to start and stop that system. This is only one example, which I can give but probably there may be some other cases in which the enabling of the M mode in the SZL may lead to negative result. Additionally as you have mentioned enabling the M mode in the SZL may not be sufficient and I may need to enable other options in other modules ... however I can easily try and if the result is not good enough, I can revert that settings.
And finally if I manage to achieve the result that I want via coding will not be as fun as achieving it with Arduino :)

Err I guess I don't see how you'll compel SZL to send any can frames from the M-button, if that feature isn't coded. IIRC the signaling between the buttons and SZL is based on resistance, so getting an arduino in between that would be a huge pain in the ***. On the other hand, running a separate wire to the m button would require a clock spring with more leads (heated steering wheel one maybe? though you may be SOL with the lane departure vibration thing in the steering wheel)

Hi guys, reviving an old thread - is anyone able to share their Arduino sketch used to sniff the k can messages? Furthermore, can anyone confirm that 120ohm termination resistors from the H and L to ground would be required when hooking up to the k can at the PDC?

Yeah that's the proper termination for the K-can. Take a look at the arduino sketch here.

Let me guess, you wanna tie exhaust cut outs into the m-mode? :)
