Updating the MK IV Nav Software to V31- Easy Version

Just did the update last night. Its an easy procedure, but after reading all I could on the topic it was very confusing because of all the multiple systems that were talked about.
This is specifically for a MK IV system and might take an hour from the time you read this and download to the time the install is done.
Background: I have a 2000 M5, upgraded the nav unit from MK II to Mk IV, and installed a widescreen 16:9 unit.

- First download the V31 updated software (save to desktop)- RapidShare: Easy Filehosting This is a Zip file.

- Download and install ImgBurn software. Its shareware and can be used for free. Do a Google search and download from the original site.

- Unzip the V31 file. In win systems, double click and extract to the desktop (or where ever you want). It should extract a .BIN, .TOC, and .CUE file. These are compressed files that ImgBurn will write to a CD.

- Open up ImgBurn and put a blank CD (yes, your Mk IV reads CDs) in your drive. I used a Sony data disk and it worked the first time.
- You want to "Write an Image file to Disk"
- Set the write speed to 1x
- and be sure to check "Verify". These are all important steps!
- Select the .CUE file and then burn the CD. It will extract a long list of files
and I think 13 folders, so you will know if youve done it right up to this
point. Make sure to "Verify" the CD to make sure there are no errors.

This is from a service bulletin.
- Go out to your car.
- Ignition to "1"
- Select "GPS Nav"
- Remove Map DVD in trunk
- Insert V31 software CD
- After a delay (a min?) you should get a screen saying something like
"updating software" and a progress bar.
- When its done it will put a new screen up "Software successfully loaded"
- Remove CD
- Confirm update by pushing "OK" with the right button.
- Reinsert your map DVD
- Done. Enjoy.

- Somewhat useful discussion on the update. Not the same V31 link. Mine is a .ZIP file. I dont know where I found it, but I like ZIP files better than .NRG or what ever: V31 has been released and is now available - X5world

- This is also a good thread on the update and how to load a custom splash screen: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/118126-v31-custom-nav-files.html

Some Notes on Nav System/Widescreen Upgrade:
- Although the M5 and X5 widescreen, nav unit, and trim ring all look the same there are subtle differences. (Ask how I know).
- If you buy a used MK IV there is at least one difference between a M5 and X5 unit. You can tell if its a X5 because you wont have an "Arrival Time". Also, getting into the hidden menu items, one of the settings, Telematics, will show X5. Check this by going to "settings" then hold the menu button down for 20-30 sec. Its in there somewhere. Someone posted a fix, but not easy. Requires dealer, or a software and hardware hack. Do a search for "No arrival Time" on this board (or the X5 Board. Sorry I cant remember. Ive done a lot of homework).
- The 16:9 screen comes in a M5 and X5 (maybe others) flavors, even though both fit and will work. Try to get one for your type of car. Some differences in the "tilt" of the screen. If you get the wrong one, it still works and can be tweeked for your car.
Check out this thread: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3.../vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/69094-16-9-widescreen-not-same-x5s-m5s.html
- Definitely a difference in the M5 and X5 trim ring bezel for the wide screen. The X5 screen trim ring is about 4mm taller that the M5 trim. Wont work. $120 at dealer, $40 on ebay.

Overall, a very cool and relatively easy upgrade.
Good luck
Sam

V31 MI-IV update

Anyone can point me to the V.31 update and what it includes?

I think I did this a couple years ago with V.27 (can't remember version) that included the birds eye view.

At that time, I also burned the the splash screen somehow, replacing the BMW with the "M Power" picture.

I don't want to lose that if I update, or need to figure out how to do it still. Any pointers? I can't recall how I did it, since it was probably 3 years ago.

Thanks,

You will need to edit the disc with a piece of software called "NavTweak".

Easy? Yea, if you know what you are doing. When I was researching how to do an upgrade I had to wade through Mk II and MK III stuff that has key codes and different burn settings, etc. It was confusing (to me anyway). So this is for just for the MK IV and includes all the links for the software all in one place.

"Anyone can point me to the V.31 update and what it includes?"- Haha- yea, this thread. See links above.

i did everything exactly as instructed

but didn't work. said there was no cd/dvd in the nav system. i have 03 with build of 12/02.

reburning now

but when i try to set it to 1x a little warning thing comes up that says: W 07:22:03 Write Speed Miscompare! - Wanted: 176 KB/s (1x), Got: 1,764 KB/s (10x). think that may be the problem?

From what you are saying "Iamderek", as stated by "E55AMG2" it sounds as though there is an issue with the media when you burn.

It may be worth changing the CD you are burning too as a miscompare definitely sounds as though there is a problem with the burning.

You may want to try getting a CD cleaner and run it through both the unit you are using to burn the CD and also through the Nav unit as they are very susceptible to dirt and errors.

Also check again that Imgburn is getting to correct speed sometimes it seems to default to as fast as possible instead of the chosen speed when burning a disc.

the problem is that even when i set it to 1x it will not burn at that speed. i even tried it with a different program called disc juggler which let me set it to 1x but still burned it at 4x. very frustrating. can burn it for me at the proper speed or copy their disc for me? pm me. thanks all.

Thanks Flybot for your very detailed instructions and link. I just finished the upgrade, and it worked flawlessly. I had to burn the CD twice, since it didnt work the first time, but other than that, I am done and upgraded. I had V-30, so I dont even know if V-31 added any funcitionalty (will do a search) that I would ever use, but having the latest version always gives me a certain sence of satisfaction.

No display after failed update

Ugh!
I followed the instructions step by step. The update failed and the display told me to eject the disc but which I did but now there is no display and the audio system cuts out after about 2 minutes and needs to be power cycled to bring it back online (this happens in any mode AM, FM or Disc/IPOD integration). I have tried pulling the negative battery terminal and leaving it overnight with no luck. I think I am screwed....

I was convinced that the Navi computer needed to be replaced as it did not recognize discs. I was encouraged that the SW update appeared to be working. My concern now is that the update pushes FW update to the head unit and now it is hung. I would re-try the upgrade with a new disc but I cannot navigate to the GPS Navigation screen.Any thoughts here?

Oh yeah...yes I am sure it is a Mark IV

Cheers,
Jason

I did this upgrade yesterday and it went fine, so I am not sure what went wrong in your case.

trying again

Not sure either but did a more extensive search and found that this has happened to other members. I will try reattempt this and see where I get

Thanks,
Jason

Sorry to hear of the issues. Im pretty sure no firmware is pushed to the head unit. But the nav unit is more than just a disk reader, as it controls video also (if you dont have the TV option). If the nav will accept the update disk, I would keep trying. They are picky disk readers on a good day. So if it was having issues before, you may be SOL.

HeyHouse, you may want to try this....

Make sure your head unit is powered down. Go to the trunk and listen to make sure the Nav unit has spun down. Again, before doing this, make sure your Nav unit has cycled down. Now disconnect the ground on the battery cutting off all power. Wait a minute and then reconnect the battery. This causes the car systems to recycle as you reconnect power. In at least one post, this brought the Nav unit out of its "brick" state to where it would read CDs.

It's worth a shot, sort of like a power down reboot after a Windows blue screen. Hope this helps.

WHEW!

So I started from scrath and tried again...IT WORKED! Thanks for the suggestions...I was freaking out but everything is working fine after I redid the upgrade procedure. It looks like the only thing that is wrong now if that the MAP Disc SW (2007.2) is unreadable. I tried copying it in my home PC and I getting all kinds of errors. I guess I am gonna have to spend the $200 and get a new one.

Thanks again for the help,
House

Learn from my mistake.

Naively I paid for a software update and updated map from BMWNAVI. What I got was a software disk that you can download for free through the links in this thread and a map disk that did not load. Going back to BMWNAVI got me nothing more some illiterate and abusive emails. A kind member of this board sorted me out but, if you do have to buy update for your map disk, do as he suggested and buy a OEM on ebay.

Whoops, too late Mate.

I am awaiting delivery on my software from BMWNAVI.com. Sounds like I am in for the shaft...My loss. I traded 3 different emails with them confirming the update of firmware (4-1/03 V.33) AND the navigation DVD. I have an 03 and my nav runs DVD vs. the CD. "Adrian" was quite clear confirming that is what I would get....We will see.:1zhelp:

Thank you for the warning, if it is bogus, which based on your testimony, seems to be, Internet wise, I will get my revenge for their lying and cheating. I dont get mad, or even, I get ahead :) By some stretch of the imagination, should it be legitimate, I will also share that.

Thank you again sir.

Update

So I received the software I ordered. I received 2 discs, 1 which was a V.32 firmware load w/ splash screen of choice and a "2010 Navigation DVD". I was expecting a V.33 as previoiusly noted.

I loaded the firmware, it loaded just fine. Issue is, I had V.31 and have noted no changes that I am aware of except maybe the automatic day/night?

My car utilizes the navigation DVD aka High Version (12/02 build) The 2010 navigation DVD I got also works just fine, but not sure if it is in fact any different than the 2008 version I had loaded to begin with. All my information / addresses etc. loaded just fine. My understanding was that one of the updates was suppose to include intersections with cameras. I have noted none. That being said, I really havent had a real good chance to drive the car since I have a bad left wing (surgery on the 22nd) and we have been on vacation.

Opinion: not worth the $49.99 unless you have an older firmware version than V.31 / navigation system.

Lesson learned Smiling...Thanks for the input

Chris,

All set Brother...Do you want any of this software? Welcome to it. Doesnt seem to be any different than what you so kindly hooked me up with. Never the less, yours if you want.
