16:9 Widescreen Not Same For X5s and M5s

For fun I thought I would start a new thread rather than spend countless hours trying to do a search on this particular subject.

In the for sale section of X5World I was reading about an E39 M5 owner who purchased a 16:9 widescreen off a particular seller and later discovered that even though the screen fits both the X5 and M5, the angle of the screen is different and was for an X5. He said he had to purchase another 16:9 screen to get a correct angled one for his M5 and is trying to sell the first one he bought on X5World at this point in time. An X5 owner responded to his thread saying they have a 16:9 screen that is really for an E39 and he wished he could have traded with him.

I was wondering if anyone else has ran in to this problem, or noticed a difference? I'm just concerned that when I buy a screen off eBay and it says "works with X5 / E39 / etc" that I will be getting a screen that looks off or is incorrect in application?

How can one tell which 16:9 screen they really need? I know there's part numbers often listed but they vary greatly and sometimes it's the part number for the housing while other times it's for the screen.

Help?

i don't have an answer, but hope someone does. I thought I heard that there was a way to set the 'pitch' of the screen so it would work in either car, but could not find any thing on the usual sites. I have a screen that i bought second hand, and it never seemed as bright, in my car as a 'oe e39' screen, and i wonder if its out of an x5. I have tried adjusting the brightness and contrast in the normal and "hidden" menus.

Hopefully we get other responses to answer your question and mine. I of course tried to read all I could on X5World in their navigation section plus check out Bimmernav and could not find anything on this subject.

Hi Guys,

I am that seller selling the X5 headunit - and heres a response i put to this on X5world.

"
Well, there is a difference - although people on eBAy are selling these as the same for E39 and X5 - they are different - for the contrast angle of the monitor itself varies - in the X5 the same unit sits higher up with a different viewing angle. You can get different front monitor panels to replace for them also.

Just as indication the parts number for each of them are:

X5 : 65 52 6 934 413
E39 : 65 52 6 913 387

Hope this helps.

Rgds

Mike,

The best to tell is see if the contrast/brightness gets better when you press the eject button and the screen moves down - if it is brighter with it open - then you have an X5 headunit. Alternatively, pull the unit out and check the part numbers with above post.

Thanks, i'll have to check the pn. The quality of the screen image does seem better as the unit tilts.

Has anyone done a direct comparison between the two when fitted in an E39? Is the difference quite noticeable? I recently bought a unit that the seller said was for an E39/E38, but having read the above about the PNs, it's for an X5. It looks OK in the car but now I'm rather annoyed that he's sold me the wrong one.

Rob,

This is the reason this entire thread started.... http://www.x5world.com/bmw-sav-items...tml#post110465

Yes, there is a noticeable difference between the E39 and the X5 montior screens based upon the viewing angle.

Unless you have seen an E39 unit fitted, most people would settle for the substandard viewing assuming that is the way it is... its not - and chances are you have been sold the wrong one.

I have the wrong one too... I'm gonna contact the seller, and ask if he can't swap it.
