Whats the difference between 540 and m5?

To be a little more technical.

Im only interested in the specifics of the motor.1997

Intake?
Cams?
computer program
injectors?
hfm?
exhausts? ex manifolds ,and etc
heads
compression

What has to be done to the 540i to make it the same power as the m5?
Or is it a completly different beast?

As far as I know, and I'm no expert, the M62 and S62 are completely different. They share no parts. I'm sure someone more knowledgable will chime in with technical specifics, but the 2 aren't interchangable. Thats not saying the M62 cannot be made to produce as much power, just not without significant alterations (ie, forced induction, ecu tuning, better internals....)

The significant technical differences between the M62 and S62 are not widely known. That article doesn't help me much.:sad2:

The difference in stroke and bore is not of concern when it comes to parts swapping and compatibility. The fact that the valvetrain and intake was highly modified on the M motor does not address whether they are compatible/retrofittable/swappable. Hopefully we'll find out someday.

Here's what I know:

1) The M62 and S62 blocks share the same deck height and bore spacing, much like comparing a 305 chevy to a 350. As most folks know, cranks and pistons can be easily juggled & swapped between certain GM motors, no matter if they had a single 2bbl or two 4bbls or fuel injection setups. One might explore the opportunity to swap reciprocating assemblies between the various BMW V8's to produce different displacements. If the crank snout was altered for various cam drive systems, you're screwed.

2) Companies have found ways to bore and refinish or install dry sleeves to allow larger pistons. I've seen some info about S62 but no experimentation on M62. One might explore opportunities to upgrade M62 pistons to the larger S62 size. I don't know if piston pin location is the same on M62 and S62. This may have been done with fitment of shorter rods in S62. If so, a bigger stroke might be achieved thru piston swap while retaining the 4.4L recip parts. One might assume that BMW is doing this to create 4.6L and 4.8L variants. I have not compared stroke and bore specs.

3) 540i and M5 share intake and exhaust valve diameters. This leads me to believe that the 540i heads are "capable", since BMW did not upgrade that for M5 use.

4) I have been trying for 3 years to get a decent picture of an M5 with the intake pulled to compare with 540i. I am not clear if the intakes can be swapped or modified to allow swapping. The 540i intake is likely a major barrier limiting power output at elevated RPM.

5) I would like to know much more about the differnce in cam mechanicals on various V8's. This topic is simply too technical for the average backyard mechanic, so we know nothing about it. Opportunities to disable vanos or swap vanos and non-vanos components or swap cams between various motors are likely being missed due to ignorance (lack of basic info).

6) exhaust headers on M62 and S62 are shared. This tells me the heads are similar in many physical respects. It also tells me the M62 exhaust is decent.

The intake flange on the head doesn't have the ring dowls to align the throttlebodies. I think VAC made adaptors for their setup.
Cams are smaller and there is no Vanos, the later M62TU had Vanos only on the intake and a few pounds of torque more.
The later M62s also have a different intake with narrower runners.

The Injectors are different, the M62 has a old std Bosch injector.
The S62 has the later narrow body with a long nossle to help with its high mounted postition.

The throttle is cabled on the early M62 later they became fly-by-wire like the S62. Traction control is also controlled by a pre throttle butterfly.
This in front of a supercharger would be the cats meow but thats another topic.

Headers, the first couple years are the same, later years had cat conveters built on the header(M62TU), the S62 stayed without.

The S62 has a oil cooler mounted in the "V" of the engine under the intake, a great source of heat during slower speeds.

So the first thing I would suggest for more power is headers.
Then swap the air intake inlet(pre airbox) for the M5 intake. the std 5series pulls air from inches of the radiator, the M5 is shorter.

So 97 m5 headers will fit a 97 540i?
And the actual intake manifold as well??
I see alot of people confuse intake manifold for the air filter box and inlet piping that comes from say,a cold air intake kit.cai

I would love to put that whole top intake on,with the double air inlets along with the headers, throttle body and maf/hfm/amm whatever u like to call it.
A nice cat back...injectors
I bet that would bring a good 60/70hp with the proper chip

There was no '97 M5 but aftermarket s62 headers will fit the m62 as well. Obviously you'll have to do some sort of Y pipe due to the single exhaust set up of the 540.

99-2003 M5 header are the same parts as the 97 540i header.

Yeah it would look cool but it will take more then its worth, invest in a VF supercharger before that.

Cat back is to easy, Have a muffler shop cut off the resonator back and put what ever flavor muffler you want on.
