Remove engine and get to work start at the top and don't stop until you get to the block no easy way about doing this. And very doable.

So there's no way to do it from the bottom?

 

Need to remove the motor and You will also need the timing tools for this. You will need to disassemble the motor cause you will need to remove any possibility of metal contamination in the pumps.

Engine out job buddy, there are a few threads on here.

If you have spun a bearing then you need the rod resized too, or replaced.

 

You need to break the bed plate loose. Big job. And after reassembly you need to inject a new seal into it. There are some posts from the U.K. here somewhere with some pictures and details. Consult BMW TIS and or ISTA/D for all the details.

 

Thanks guys. Still can't find any DIYs, but in any case, it sounds like more work than what I'd want to do in my relatively small garage with no engine hoist/stand, etc. In this particular case, I'm not sure the crank needs replacing, but I'm guessing it probably does. I haven't seen it yet. It's not my car we're talking about; it's a car I'm considering buying at a very low price.

If the bearings have failed enough to cause a noise, does that usually mean the crank is toast as well?

 

Likely but not 100% sure.

 

100% crank needs to be repaired or replaced.
