Rear fog lights on U.S. version E39?

I was wondering if anyone had done the modification described at this site, which describes how to enable the rear fog lights on the U.S. version E39, which normally has them disconnected.

It's very interesting. I bought all the parts (really low cost), and I'm
debating doing the mod. I have a couple of questions:

1. Does the European E39 have both rear foglights enabled, or just one? Are there rules about the rear fog lights in Europe?

2. Has anybody had a horror story about driving in fog where rear fog lights could have (or did) made a difference?

3. Any thoughts or opinions about rear fog lights?

Thanks.

to answer your questions,

1) Yes, not sure but it could be that tis illegal to use them unless it is foggy.

2) I doubt it , but i use them as a rear flasher (switching it on and off a few times) just incase the car behind me has his high beams on.

3) a cool small mod that actually can help you in extreme foggy situations cuz it allows others to see.

Both are enabled.

Rules are that they should only be used in FOG and you can be stopped by the police and fined for inappropriate use.

I only use them in exceptional circumstances as I am aware that rear foggies can reduce the impact of brake lights, the high intensity masks the brake and increases the risk of a rear end shunt.

Thanks for the link!

I think I'll go ahead and do this mod. Looks like overall good feedback.
Your welcome. I was thinking about the mod, but unfortunately very few here in the U.S. understand/know what the rear fogs lights are:confused2

Funny story, in the mid 1990's my dad had an Alfa Romeo 164S, it came with the rear fogs, one night he got pulled over for them! Cop didn't know what to make of them, had never seen or heard of them beforeouich

Mark,
Is this hooked up on a separate switch, like the normal fog lights? Or are they tied in together?

EDIT:
I can't wait to see how bright they are! I would love this for anyone who might tailgating me, however that rarely happens :hihi:

Separate switch, actually the same switch, but it has multiple positions. IIRC, it's rear on only, or both front and rear.

Most (non enthusiasts) in the US don't get rear fogs. Look at all the volvos, audis and jags with them on all of the time. Just like so many do with the fronts...

it actually is the same switch as the current front flg lamps but the only difference is that both front and rear flog lamps can be chosen

On the UK version it is a seperate switch. You can see it just to the left of the dials.

First position is front fogs only, second position is front and rear. You can't have the rears on without the front. Also you must have the main side (running) lights on as well. At first it confused me in that the switch doesn't stay in the second position, it will only stay in the first position, I guess it's to stop you leaving the rears on when you next get in the car.

Because I do not run into that much fog, I used the space for two additional brake lights.

I always understood that you used ONE rear lamp for fogs, on the driver's side, just so other drivers were not confused.
Twin fogs look more like brake lights, and IMHO defeat their purpose.

That is correct in the UK. It only tends to be the older cars (like the E39) which come with 2 rear fog lights. More modern cars have indeed got only a single light, on the offside, to avoid confusion with brake lights.

Their usage in the UK is governed by the following rules in the Highway Code (http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/)

94: You MUST NOT
* use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users.

201: You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 211).

210: When driving in fog you should
* use your lights as required in Rule 201

211: You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 201) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.
