Oil level sensor - possible failures ?

Hi Guys,

I'd like to ask you about problem issues of oil level sensor,
I think my dashboard oil level display shows maximum 0,8 L
I am trying to keep level close to maximum level 1,0 L, but after adding 0,2L from the bottle (while car shows on display 0,7 or 0,8 L) level showed on display doesn't change or it shows still 0,8 L.
I am afraid to overfilling engine with oil...

I wonder, what type of oil level sensor you experienced ?
What type of failure information you had during that problem.. ?
Maybe my oil sensor failed and I should change it, but there is no obvious OBC communicates about it at all....

Regards!

Even after filling mine up, I believe it continues to register a small need. I just fill it up again once it drops to about half way.

You need to review your Owner's manual! Basically, it says do not add until it requests +1L. It goes on to say you need to add at least 0.5L to have the system register the add. If we had a regular dipstick, I'd say keep it topped up to your heart's content, but since we don't, you should learn to live within the limits of the system we have. I'd say you run the risk of overfill if you keep adding in 0.2L increments.

Thanks for your explanations!

To tell you the truth, I was filling up few times before with around 0,2L while obc showed 0,8L or 0,7L, and that adding was register by car and in the result showed higher level of oil.
Maybe last two times didn't show results of adding.
Few days ago I've heard about the same issue in M3 e92, after filling up 0,XL no results on obc at once, in few days later showed at last...

I've heard is good to keep around maximum oil level for healthy high pressure vanos pump, maybe some sort of urban legend, but fragile of our V10 makes me so cagey....

Very simple solution only fill 1 qt/Liter when the car asks for it. The level you are reading is ABOVE the minimum level needed to operate the car. Not above Zero oil capacity. When it calls for oil you still have about 8 liters in the car. Just wait til the car asks for oil, then give it a bottle , reset the level indicator and be on your way.

Let me share with you guys last update....

I have mentioned about similar issue of wrong oil indicating with M3 e92,
and I have information that source of that problem in M3 was...... alternator's voltage regulator :)
I got problem with regulator anyway, disco dash works :) so I think that is the point and after replacing regulator oil dash indicating after small adding 0,XL should be again correct.
