Here in Norway (probably Denmark too) we would be delighted with the car prices you have in the US or Germany. A deler has a 2001 M5 (low mileage) which can be yours for "only" 110.000 EUR grrrrrrr . A new E39 was a 150.000 EUR car (aprox). :( . The E60 will probably be priced even higher, since we pay a high tax to the gouvernment when we buy a car. The tax is based on engine volum, bhp and weight, and amount to about 60 percent of the total car price. The E60 545i starts at 125.000 EUR.

$73,195 ?

just the messanger. dont shoot me. ouich
i have no idea WTF (where da...) he got this number.
and 20mpg in an RS6 is some out of body experience. hmmm
That sounds low, but if true... AWESOME! With a 545i6 without NAV coming in around 63k... a 10k bump to the M is a steal. If that is the price, BMW can expect to sell ALOT of M5s.

Loaded e39 M5s sold around that same price.

I checked out the RS6, and S4 at the autoshow this weekend... Talk about disappointed. They are almost totally stock except the engines. The shifter STILL SUCKS! And I was really disappointed with the sales weinie at the display booth. When he was making his pitch about the car, my wife and mentioned the sloppy shifter. His response "You get used to it, or if it is really that bad, you should get the automatic". Get the auto?? Who is he kidding? And what kind of response is that on a 50k+ car? Shows that Audi does not make "Driver's Machines".

BTW... feel even more for the e60. I liked the Lemans Blue (at least that is what the marker said, it looked more like Orient Blue to me).

I also feel that this is a decent price for US owners. That is not that much of an increase over the E39 M5 and is a lot less then the E55 or RS6. If this is indeed the case, I think I may actually consider an E60 (I thought it would be in the $90k range).

That seems like a pretty low number unless BMW intends on offering a longer options list on the E60 M5 like they have on the 530/545 models.

Terk.

I think that sounds low....I would imange that BMW would charge somewhere in the low 80's for the E60 M. We will have to wait and see. If that is correct it would be a bargin and BMW would sell a bunch of them, which could be the plan....spread the cost out over more units sold.

Vndkshn,

The Cosworth motor, breaks, transmission(modified w12 trans), exhaust (sport exhaust is largely hand made by quattro Gmbh), seats, interior trim, headliner, gauges, steering wheel, suspension with DRC, aluminum front hood, fenders, front, rear bumpers and grills are all different on the RS6 to the A6 4.2. Sounds a little different to me

The S4 and A4 I dont know about but for sure but the motor, trans, exhaust front and rear bumber and seats are different not sure about the rest of the car. In the past the transmissions and shift linkage have been sloppy on the S4's. Have read they are better on the new S4 but have not tried myself. Do know that Aud has had some problems with the clutch and transmission failing on the new S4.

Not saying that there are not differences, just they don't do anything to really stand out as different. I sat in both and while the trim etc is different... it did not stand out as "Wow, this is the high end sport version" to me. That said, it was a better looking car, but not that much better.

The S4 was a real disappointment. It looked very stock, the wheels were boring, the interior (while better materials) seemed to standard, the shifter has the exact same sloppy feel (just a better looking knob).

Walking right down the path to the BMW area... compared the standard 3 (and even the 330pp) with the M3 was like night and day.

I would be interested to drive the S4 just to compare to the M3, but suspect I would be very disappointed.

In Taiwan, the price on the M5 is around 6,000,000 NT. At a rate of 33 NT to the USD it comes out to $181,818. Oh BTW, you have to pay annual taxes on the car too. ;)

Mpressed and clee19821013:

Did some more research to compare.
M3: 142.000$, 115.000 EUR
CSL: 172.000$, 139.000 EUR
E55 AMG: 239.000$, 193.000 EUR

The E55 is a lot like the M5 (size, weight and power, but not fun zzzzz ). I sure hope the E60 will have a much lower MSRP than that when it comes out. The BMW 5 is usually priced lower than the Mercedes drag racer anyway, so i'm not worried we will see a MSPR this high. We don't pay a yearly tax. Only a minor road tax which is the same no matter what car you drive.

in Taiwan they charge tax based on displacement, and by the way you meant
142,000 not 142.000 didn't you, I mean otherwise I am heading to your country right now hiha

I could see 75,000 or so. Remember the 1995 M5 sold for the US equivelent of 63,000. The 00 went 69,500.. If that trend continues 75 is realistic.

The M6 will likely be in the 80's.

I hope you are right, but I expect you are probably between 5 and 10k short unfortunately. A 545i6 with cold weather, premium sound, PDC, NAV, lumbar and heated rear seats comes up at over 65k, not including destination, etc.

If memory serves, a loaded 540i6 would set you back about 58 to 60k. The M5s were going for 73-75k or more.

With a nicely equiped 545i6 costing 65k, I suspect we will see that same 15k or even more considering some of the new technology involved.

But, I hope you are right.

I feel pricing will come in just under the E55 as well. Keep in mind the E55 has a low base price comparable to the 73k noted here. The only thing is there is a LOT of options available, and by the time you get half of them, you are at 85 grand. I think we will see the same happen where the M5 will not come essentially fully loaded anymore, will start at 73 grand, but optioned out may cost 85 or so.

personally I yearn for a manual and the ability to pull through a corner like no other sedan can...but can i get over that interior?

Actually I could care less. Thanks to bangle I'll not get one. Maybe an M6 but no way would I drive the new 5. It's downright ugly. I don't care how many horses it has....
