Inspired by "Poor Mans iPhone Integration" Thread, I wanted to link my iPhone up to my Intravee system.
The main problem being I wanted the phone up front, but where to mount it?
Many Thanks to RichardP1, who told me what to do from the outset, and answered many questions (and this guy doesn't even own an iPhone!)
This is the end result
I was inspired initially by the above thread and had ordered the parts to mount it in a similar way, then I stumbled across a company who do a custom mount which sits in the ashtray (But at $170 ish was too expensive). Richard had told me I needed an in-line Scosche PassPORT adaptor, so the system would charge the iPhone, but I then found a Scosche passPORT Home Dock charging adaptor (Link:Scosche passPORT Home Dock charging adaptor - black on eBay (end time 02-May-10 10:24:27 BST) and its ÂŁ10 cheaper than buying from Apple!)
Initially I was going to fit this into the ashtray, but it was going to take a lot of work, proably look rubbish, and I was worried that it wouldn't be stable enough and I would keep knocking it! AND what then really stopped me is that there was no way the cable would have fitted into the bottom of the ashtray and if I did manage it there was no way the ashtray would be able to close.
So I then looked elsewhere and came up with this, the iPhone rests on the bottom giving it some extra support.
It cost me ÂŁ20 to do the entire job, as all I did was used the slack on the cable to the Alpine-KCA to move that to the ski hatch (which I dont have, but have a hole which said wire went through) then under rear seats, carpet and with some skin missing from nuckles into the centre console, bodged a hole in the back of the drawer and double sided sticky tape on the Scosche adaptor and Bob's your uncle!
It fits a treat, you can see the screen and access it fairly easy, of which is difficult if fitted into centre armrest, ashtray, or cupholders.
All in all I am very pleased, also you can plug iPod in if needed. Or should I say should wife be driving without iPhone!
Also, you can still use the ashtray:
