First of all the Individual program is officially only available for the 6-series and 7-series in the US; officially. However if you have a good relationship with your dealer and you are ordering a substantial amount of Individual options on your BMW M5 or M6. As I have understood the process is as follows.

-You specify to your US dealer what exteriour colour from the current Individual palette for either the 5-series or Individual palette from other BMW range (at extra cost). You might even choose any colour for an even extra cost.

-You specify your interiour leather (full leather or not), biccolour and if so two what colours of leather, colour of Alcantara in the headliner (inner roof), colours of threads of stitching in full leather (on instrumentpanel etc), colour of floormats, colour of interiour textile and more.

-When you specified your exact Individual order to your Dealer, your Dealer will ask the BMW Regional Area Manager that will contact BMW North America. BMW North America will contact BMW Individual in Garching, Germany and and an OK from them will trigger the order. I assume it is then your Dealer will get the exact price quote for your BMW M5 or M6 Individual.

From what I beleive if your order is very special (we are talking Individual options for say around $25-30 000) you might get an Individual customer representative that can do visualizations of your exteriour and interiour of your car. That representative is I beleive based at BMW M and Individual HQ in Germany.

Potential problem is that BMW NA does not want to be sitting with a delivered Individual car (pink anyone?) that the customer does not want to take delivery of, so this is why your relationship with your Dealer counts alot for this to go trhough.

Finally a quote from an upcoming very Individual M V10 owner.

"So, my only advice for anyone in the U.S.wanting to order an
Individual is to be patient and pressure your dealership to work with
BMWNA. But expect it to take a while if you are not ordering one of
the standard Individual composition packages and paint colors."

BMW Individual M5 Sedan : Overview

BMW Individual M6 Coupé : Overview

Some examples of Individual colors for the M6 (all of which I have seen or seen samples of):

Diopside Black (green within the black)
Azurite Black (blue within the black)
Ruby Black
Brilliant White Metallic
Ontario Gold Metallic (no, don't order that, I want to be the only one)
Moonstone (much better in person than in photos - fabulous color)

And you can order previously offered colors which are not currently offered or are offered on another series. For example:

Imola Red
Phoenix Yellow

So does this mean that production will not stop at the end of 2009?
Production has basically stopped. BMW is making stock cars for dealer inventory.

M6 production will not end until June 2010. That is a fact directly from BMW-M yesterday. Too late for M5 cars from the looks of it.

So don't expect to order an M6 in June either. And if its an Individual, allow more time for ordering and production that a regular M6.

Hi Gustav and the lads.

First post here.

Early in the post you mentioned that you can order any colour combination for the interior of your car through BMW individual. Or am I mistaken.
For example, I want to buy an M3 and I would like to have the same black/white interior seen in the M6 Competition Package model.

Will I be able to do this through my local dealership? Will it be a hassel for them or is it as simple as going through colour combinations seen on other models and ordering it for the M3 through a database?

Or would I have to go the way Mark has gone with his very individual M6.

Thanks in advance.

You could do it while going through your delaer and they would have a direct contact with BMW M. It is less complicated orderign from the UK than the US for Individual models.

I think it helps to know what is "normally" offered via the Individual program for s 3 series car. Refer to the following as a starting point. You can then ask to mix and match from there.

BMW 3 Series Coupé : 360° Visualizer

javascript:download(buildValidServerRelativeUrl('/com/en/newvehicles/3series/coupe/2006/allfacts/individual/_teaser/pdf/catalogue_bmw_individual_3series_coupe_en.pdf'))

For instance, you might "start" with Platinum full Merino leather and then "add" black leather to selected parts of the interior (to mimic the M6 Competition Edition). And you should see if the standard or "normal" Individual exterior colors are are what you want before going further afield. That helps to keep the costs down and minimize the "special" option count.

Good luck. As Gustav said, the UK, having a longer established Individual program, is probably easier than asking for a very custom car from the U.S. (but even than can be done if you are persistent).

Cheers

Wow cheers guys!

Its good to read your comments. Mark you car and story is inspirational.

I saw it on M3 post and asked where I might be able to contact you and ask you about getting the options ordered.

Ive been dreaming of buying an M3 since 2007 when they came out in the UK. Unfortunately my work requires a bit of travelling around (film VFX) so havent been able to pick one up. But now I'm returning home to London to settle and can finally pick up my baby. The Mrs has been very jealous.

Cheers

Hi,

Im working at Weta Digital in New Zealand. Just finished doing some serious stuff on Avatar.
As much as New Zealand is amazing and the work is great, all of our family is in the UK. Its tough been on the otherside of the world sometimes.
