High speed auxiliary electric cooling fan relay melting

This is a problem I have on my 530i daily driver but as this is a similar system to the M5 I thought I'd ask here.

When I bought the 530i the high speed electric fan relay was disconnected and the relay plug was partly melted (original plug is the cream one in the bottom photo)

I replaced the relay plug and put a new relay in and the relay has melted resulting in the fan running even with the ignition key off. I have to pull the relay to shut the fan down.

Questions

1. Has anyone seen this before ?

2. The auxiliary electric fan runs on both low speed and high speed. Would the terminal melting be caused by a fault with the electric motor ? It turns ok by hand

I replaced the relay then the wires feeding the relay plug melted so I suspect the auxiliary fan motor is shorting on the high speed circuit as the fan runs fine on low speed.

An update on this old thread , I replaced the complete auxiliary fan assembly on the 530i and the problem hasn't returned , the fan motor was faulty
