Hi guys looking for advice from owners who have gone through the vanos replacement and diagnosis procedures.

My car sound like this:

YouTube - M5 Idle engine sound - good or bad???

I am guessing the vanos is capoot!

I am guessing these parts are needed to "refresh" the vanos units and their problematic woes.

Any advice would be much appreciated as I dont wont to waste money just replacing everything, I dont want to sell the car as I would waste a large amount on stamp duty etc when I can just fix it and enjoy it.

Thanks guys!

I have replaced the vanos on my E46 M3 but that was because of the solenoids packing it in. You really need to take it to a dealer, and get them to diagnose it. However don't buy your vanos off BMW Australia if it comes to that. The E46 M3 vanos retailed at $6300 but I bought mine from BMW UK for $2300 exchange.

I strongly suggest that you use www.bmminiparts.com as you will find that it is WAY cheaper to buy from BMW UK than BMW Aust for most items. However if you still want to buy off BMW Aust contact me and I will speak to my contact in Melbourne.

Good luck with it and post back what you find. PM me with your email address if you want to talk off line.

Test drove an 08 build today as suspected and read they make no diesel sound on operating temperature. Also went in an 9/05 build funnily enough it was identical. Same year build with more klms and it was exactly the same with vibration and diesel idle tone original owner and he stated that it has always sounded the same from day one.

I am dealing with a vault in WA, they are not giving me any information as to whether they did recalls. A month ago they stated they have never done one, then yesterday the assistant service manager stated he cant remember when they last did one. The difference in conversation tells me something has been done before but as per usual they play the denial game. Last time they did this with me I had my lawyer write a nice letter to BMW Australia and they paid to repair my E46 M3 rear subframe for free under goodwill. We provided the evidence via BMW NA case findings and I also had panel beaters in Australia on my side to provide evidence, with the E60 M5 I am having trouble finding proof of repairs for the vanos system in Australia.

If anyone can get some evidence or have someone willing to be a reference to having a repair under goodwill please contact me.

I know your problem is a lot bigger than just a oil line replacement but could this have caused it in the first place if it wasn't replaced.
Also meant to mention I read in the latest BMW Car magazine that BMW U.K are going to release and sell various extended warranties for all BMW's regardless of age and mileage (sounds to good to be true)
see Home
I called BMW Australia yesterday to ask if they will also be offering them and I was told to check back with them in a couple of months as they are looking into it.

Big thank you to M5 VTEN I have emailed the pdf from the 5series link to the manager.

A metal clacking noise is apparent only from starvation as it should have been well lubricated which is where the oil pressure line most definately would have caused my problems.

Just cant believe there is no one on this forum openly admitting they have had the recall for the pressure line done or that there is a vanos recall on the early models in Australia.

M5aud....

Check out this thread I found. It contains recalls on the M5 for 06-07

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e6...ulletin/e60-m5-e61-m5-touring-discussion/113071-list-recalls-my2006-2007-a.html

Will the dealer do these SIB even though I'm out of factory warranty???

Cant see why not, a manufacture defect is actually covered and warranted by law in the automotive industry for up to 10 years. When I fought BMW Australia over the replacement of the rear subframe in my E46 M3 MY03.5 it was done under goodwill. They by law have to pay for it, as soon as you enforce a legal representative they will back off and assume responsibility.

The above link you have posted is relevant, a lack of oil starves mechanical metal parts and thus causes a wearing metal sound, I believe it is the causation for the ill vanos system.

Please find the details for that service bulletin below with pdf from BMWNA attached.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: S85 Replace VANOS High Pressure Line

MODEL
E60 M5 with S85 produced up to 11/22/05

SITUATION
The VANOS high pressure line may start to leak engine oil around the flexible hose.

A Service Action will be conducted on all affected vehicles which have not already had the improved VANOS line replaced. Customers will be mailed letters notifying them of the Service Action shortly (copy of the customer letter is attached).

To minimize customer's inconvenience caused by this Service Action, you are being asked to pick-up (and deliver after repair), if necessary, the affected vehicle from customer's home, and provide appropriate alternative transportation.

Customers will be impressed when you return their cars cleaned inside and out and with a full tank of gas. Reimbursement information for the vehicle fueling and valet costs can be found in the Warranty portion of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves M5 vehicles with S85 engines which were produced from the beginning of production up to 11/22/05.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

The required tightening torques can be found in TIS under: 11 36 Variable camshaft control. All sealing rings must be replaced.

Important: Only copper sealing rings must be fitted.

Reassemble all removed parts.

Verify that the engine oil level is correct and top off as necessary.

Note: When fitting the new line, make sure that there is sufficient distance to the cable tie on the secondary air hose on the bottom of the engine. If the cable tie is fitted with the lock facing upwards (towards the VANOS high pressure line) it must be replaced. When doing so, make sure the cable tie lock is positioned at the bottom (see illustration to the left).

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 459. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-278) and:

emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

punch out code number 459 printed on the label and,

affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
