Today I washed the beast, when I got home I was wiping it down . I had the windows down and the radio on listening to music . When I finished and got the wife and kids in the car to go to the doctor, I start it only to be greeted by a red cog.... So I guess it's time to get a diagnostic program. I have looked around on here to see which one is the best, but does anyone have any opinions. I would like to be able to do my diagnostics from my laptop. And data log if possible.

I don't have the code yet, I have had the car for about a month . I have been trying to figure out which program that I need to use to interface with the computer. And the cable as well. Guess I will be speeding the process up a bit now. I would like the program that allows you to bleed the vanos system and do the smg adaptation? The car has 99k on it right now.

Keep in mind, sometimes when you fully don't shut down the car and let it sit in "radio mode" (where radio is working etc.) you have to shut it down completely, close the door, lock it and unlock it, so the SMG pump will prime. In some cases SMG pump wont prime which will result in car not starting and throwing a code.

If you're SMG is doing that, you need to get it looked at. I've waited for months in a parking lot for my wife to come out of a store and that's never happened. If yours does that when you try to start, the SMG is trying to actuate the clutch and doesn't have enough stored pressure to do so. That could be a sign your accumulator pre-pressure charge isn't correct.
