Do a search. I believe that there are a few members that actually tinted the front windshield with Huper Optik with no HUD probs.

 

I have a tinted windshield with no HUD probs!

 

Any particular specific tint or will anyone do?? I was thinking of tinting my windshield too but stopped because of the HUD,thinkin it won't work.

 

no problems here either. Got 60% done and it works very well to get the heat out. Now, it is very comfortable driving when teh sun is hitting me in my face. Make sure you get the ceramic type

 

Huper Optik ceramic here, no problem.

 

I have 40% Llumar Axcess tint all the way around (front included). Gives a nice even look to the car and plenty dark for me. The HUD looks slightly softer with the tint. Like the difference when you hook a lcd monitor up with an analog connection. It does not make it any harder to read or decrease brightness that I can tell. I would highly recommend tinting the front if you can. Blocking the UV rays from the leather dash has got to help in the long run and it makes the car so much cooler.

 

Got it tinted all round yesterday, no problem with HUD visibility.

wow - how nice, some states in the U.S. forbid tinting windshields and even ticket people for too dark of a tint on the front side windows.

Why would you tint your windshield...as an M5 owner I would think you were an enthusiast who realized how important having the best possible visibility is to safe driving...why hinder your vision...especially at night...plus, tinting a windshield is really a teeny bop type thing anyway...are you going to put some type of message/sticker on the top of your windshield too...

Here in NJ it is illegal but i like the privacy aspect of it. Had all my cars tinted since i can remember but never the windshield. gonna get it done next week now that i know it doesn't affect the HUD. Probably like a 50% tint for the front to complement the 20% on the sides. Don't want people looking at you when you drive fast. haha.

 

I just don't get the windshield tinting. Seems so out of character for real car enthusiasts.

i think the word "tint" makes it sound like you're really affecting visibility. Nobody could tell that my windshield has the ceramic tint because of the 60%. It is all for the heat blocking as where I live could get a little toasty in the summer. Now, for those who put on some darker shades, then I agree it does affect driveability during nightime. We shouldn't generalize "tint" as something that affects visibility all around. Thereare differing shades. Just go very light as I have and others have, and you're good to go - my 2cents

 

Noble's right on tinting the front. Even with a 60% tint (I believe you can even get 90% films that are pretty much just UV blockers) you can barely tell the windshield is tinted at all, but it can make a big difference with heat rejection.

One thing to watch out for... if you ever come across a DUI checkpoint at night and the cops are waving their flashlights, your windshield will reflect light back almost like a mirror, a dead giveaway that it's tinted. And I believe that tinting a windshield is illegal in ALL states, so they may not be too kind about it. On the other hand, I would invite a police office to glance down to your HUD, and make him aware that you have a special windshield that is approved for the HUD system. Making a cop second guess whether the film is aftermarket or standard with that feature will probably get you out of it...perhaps in all states except Arizona where they are insane about ticketing people just for tint violations.

 

Has anyone done this with Carbon Film? Wondering if it will affect HUD -- sounds like it won't but just want to confirm. Any of y'all with say 40-50% have a picture?

Yeah, I was definitely under the impression of "tint" adding darkness to the windshield.
How much does that run? more particularly that Huper Optik ceramic for the windshield? Granted the average tint job costs about $200 here in LA for all the windows (less the windshield of course)

 

I just got my windows tinted here in SC yesterday and the entire job ran me $200 at a top notch shop here. Had all windows done at 18%. They said the windshield can be done, but it's $100 because it's illegal. If you get caught driving with a tinted windshield (at least here in SC), it is a $800+ fine and if they find out who did the job, they get fined $10k+ Needless to say, this is looked very down upon by law enforcement. But, as you can see from NobleM400, 60% is virtually undetectable to the naked eye.

 

For those in states with windshield inspection stickers and license tags, the annual removal can be a problem on tinted windows.

 

Here in Estonia , it is illegal to put tints on your front sidewindows aswell. Cops here have a special tint detector, but they usually don't fine, you just have to scrape off the tint if you want to drive away from the scene:grrrr:. I belive we can have 75% on the front side windows , and no tint whatsoever on the front window. But this is impossible to achieve , because even the lightest tints they offer here, exceed the limit very easily.

That stuff has the adhesive on the back... how can you possibly scrape it off cleanly on the scene?

 

It comes off easily, because the tint vinyl(?) is easy to take off, even with just fingers. Just something sharp to get the vinyl running, and it comes off nice and easy, mostly even without any glue left on the window. And yes, because your car is not legal to run on the street , you have to decide, whether to leave it there (doh!), or scrape it off and drive away. They can fine you , but mostly our police officers are sensible on this matter , and they just ask you to take it off , or else you can't drive anywhere from the scene.

Edit : Oh and that applies for all types of tints I guess , because I got a 5 year warranty on the job, and 20 years (!!!!!!) on the tint vinyl. Its just fits so easily and it is easy to take off, and so far I cant see any defects on any of my cars. I remember an incident on the evening news , where they made an E39 M5 driver scrape it off , and he got both tints of in 5 minutes or so, ran the glass up , like it was never there.
