Parts cars have become incredibly hard to find for reasonable prices lately, but BMW does have bare short blocks in stock for $5k.
Just to be clear: Shortblocks are not available, but rather, bare blocks with nothing but main caps. All plugs, main bolts and bushings, and all bottom end components have to be sourced separately.

Glad you were able to salvage some use out of this engine! I've recently seen not only the bolts for the chain tensioners, but the stanchions into which the bolts screw ripped off the engine as a result of chain guide failure. I hypothesize that brown plastic pieces get jammed into some places and wreak the necessary havoc to do this.

The chain guides undoubtedly are THE weakest link of this engine, and I spend a fair amount of time thinking how best to improve them. One cannot glue the brown plastic to the metal (I've seen the result of that done by another shop, and it was ugly). It may be as simple as replacing the brown plastic of the U-shaped chain guide with better material (PTFE?) so that the clips are more effective at holding the guide in place, much like Raj Beisan (may he RIP) did with the upper right chain guide for the S54 (which we use in all of our S54 builds). A more extensive approach would be to convert the guide to one that allows the chain to ride on ball bearings, but I think that's a bit of a pipe dream and might introduce an even greater risk of failure. I will continue to cogitate.
