Has anyone else heard about the 408 bhp M5 specials that were produced by Motorsport?

The story goes that the factory produced 2 or 3 cars (circa 1993 model) with breathed on motors for the likes of the touring car drivers and Paul Roesche.

I spoke to someone in Motorsport a few years back who confirmed this but would not divulge the specification or provide chassis no's.

Then a friend of mine who unfortunately is no longer with us heard that one of these cars was purchased by a wealthy guy who lived on the south coast and for enjoyment drove sight seeing coaches across Europe.

I tried to track him down but this came to nought, I even contacted the service departments of the main dealers in the area to see if this car had ever received servicing/repairs by them but this showed no result. It was said at the time that he used to have the car serviced in Munich but that seems a hell of a long way to go!

It would certainly be a nice power to weight ratio, I believe it was acheived by trick cams better breathing and a boyesen exhaust.

@M5Touringreg
I have a copy of an interesting dcoument that maybe you could look at for me relating to this car.
Could you let me have your email address as I cannot send a PM until I have got to 45 posts.
Many thanks

Have you studied all the 34 pages of this 'thread' incl the inputs made by Signore J.M. Graziadei ?
(btw > he is the owner of the E34 M5touring assembled/prepared at the Garching facilities of the M-GmbH for the 'Motorshow Bologna' in 1992(!)) -

A said, I agree these are interesting cars. However, there are
no indications or facts pointing towards the 400/408 bhp
subject cars. On the contrary, as these cars all
seem to be exhibition, photo, demo cars, it is unlikely that
there is any connection to the 400/408 bhp cars that were
,given, (except for the official Dubai car) to
BMW celebrities and ,/// M GmbH courtesy contacts’.

It also seems from the files that the a.m. cars had been
researched and investigated before. Again, fantastic vehicles
but no ,400/408 bhp cars‘ connection.
If you wish, I suggest we discuss these cars under a new
heading or in the pm/communication/message function.

As for GD64079 and just for the record > this car was
recently auctioned on BaT and subsequently moved from it’s previous owner in the U.K. to the US, to a new
owner and to join the considerable number of
E34 M5/M5touring cars ,over there’ already.

Hi all.

Barely read the topic to the end. :)
Thank you for a lot of interesting information about this unicorn.

4.0 cylinder blocks were mentioned here. Several cars with this abbreviation got into Russia. All parts (block, pistons, crankshaft) were measured, they met 3.8 standards.

Wrote through an electronic translator, translation heresy is possible. :)

if any one is interested in a 4.0 liter block I have one. It has a 4.0 stamped on it. It comes with a statement from bmw that these have been produced but were supposed to be discarded and not taken home...
I had contact with one of the former engine guys from this time. He told me that around 100 blocks and 200 heads were produced but they never managed to get the heat problem solved for a "normal" street car.
Please contact me if you are interested.
I can ship worldwide.
