Guys...I need your advice...I ordered a 2007 M6, it arrives tomorrow. For the last few months I have been waiting for this baby! I have been going over the financing with the the dealership...this will be the 4th BMW my wife and I have purchased/leased from them. I would be trading in my 2004 M3...

Here is the problem...I considered these guys at the dealership my friends and they are playing me a bit. For the last few months they assured me of the approximate finance figures...Now that the car is here they are not giving me the numbers we discussed, not even close. They didn't come out and say, but infered that "if I don't buy the car, we'll be able to sell it in a few days" and they truly made me feel as if they could care less about all of our REPEAT business/loyalty.

So...I looked at the CLS 63 AMG...let me tell you...it's hot, sexy, fast, more refined and a bit more "professional" looking...and did I mention, about $10k less expensive!

Just found out my wife is pregnant and she likes the 4-doors of the CLS...(neither of us like the looks of the M5).

HELP !!! Do I suck it up and buy the M6 ???
Would I be disappointed buy choosing the CLS 63 AMG ?

Your thoughts on this would be GREATLY appreciated...and I need them asap!!!

Thanks !

Bingo!

Walk. If only to make a point. As soon as you become a repeat customer they become less likely to sweat to get your business.

I'm currently in the market for an M6 and I've been offered cars below list in your area.

Disagreement with Beyder28's opinion regarding the looks of the CLS inspires me to write. M6 vs. CLS was the same decision I put to myself, and I also found my regular BMW dealer behaving like a disloyal jackass. Although I'm certain that I made the right decision with an M6, the looks of the CLS are in my opinion superb, very fresh and dynamic. They are perhaps spoiled a bit by the AMG body kit, though.

The M6 is a much harder-edged drivers car, and how much of that will you do with a wife and baby ? The CLS has much more useable power in a typical suburban setting, with its low-end torque and an automatic. The CLS is also much less complicated to drive, so it is more easily shared with other family members, valets, etc. I have enough other cars to buy for passion, but if I had only one or two I think Frank's observations are right on target.

Oddly enough the worst feature of the CLS in my view is the size of the side windows, it feels like a bunker. If you can tolerate that and if MBs recent reliability problems have been tamed, it would definitely be the better family car. Be prepared, however, that in a few weeks or months when you're alone in the car on a lonely back road, you will regret not having an M-car.

edit - You should look at the comparison test done by Automobile magazine, on their website.

I beg to differ. Let them sell it! I just bought mine mid-August (showroom) and there were PLENTY of coup in stock all over the country. Of course, if you've ordered a convertible, that's a different story (but only for a few months). I really think you'll be able to find an existing M6 even without ordering.

Walk. CLS is a different car; it all depends on what you want. M6 is a driver's car. CLS is more of a luxury thing and a status symbol (at least here in Cali).

Walk no matter what car you get. Don't let them OWN you. The CLS is a hot car and the 63 is fun to drive. I think the M6 looks a bit better, drives a bit faster, and handles better. But for a 4 door luxury car, the CLS is tought to beat.

With the solid armrest in the middle, you won't have as much room in the CLS's backseat as you would a M5 or E63.

If you are asking the question here on this board, I feel you ultimately regret your decision if you go with the MB. Don't get a sub-par car if you REALLY want an M6. It may take a little more time to find one, but if your dealer is jerking your chain, leave him and become a customer at another BMW dealer, write your old dealer a letter about how they suck and lost your business. There is no reason why you cannot get an M6 at MSRP these days.

As far as maintenance goes, I have been told to keep a liter of oil in my boot for the break-in. Well, my SMG is rock solid, I'm still at 1.0L on oil, I bump 5500 RPM at least three times a day, and other than a chip in my front grill (getting it replaced for about 50 Euro) from a trucker on A66, it's perfect. I have 500 Km on her now and once my break-in is over, I'm going to push her much harder. She is a 2007 and so far... so good.

I also looked at a CL63 AMG for a while, but it's still just a MB. Like many neighbors I have here in Germany have told me... "Why do you want a Mercedes? They're for old people..."

Are you old???

With a child on the way I highly recommend a four door sedan. You can use child seats in the M6, but I think you'd grow tired of that pretty quickly, given the limited space and access. Ideally you could test drive the CLS if you haven't already.

In any event, I agree with everyone in that you should run, not walk, from that dealer. Keep us posted as to your decision and good luck :).

I agree that MB's are for old people and the reliability of the car's stink. Having said that, the CLS would be a much better family cruiser than an M6. The M6 is a pure driver's car(considering it is a 2 ton GT). I am not sure why anyone with a young child and a wife would consider spending so much on an M6 at this time of your life? Heck, why don't you get the Porsche Turbo truck?! Plenty of room, easy to drive, all weather friendly and about in the same price range. Did you get rid of your M3 because of the baby or were you just looking for another car? One thing I must tell you is that the M6 is really a complex, work intensive car to own and drive. It is almost difficult to drive well and it is not practical as a winter car or even a daily driver for many. It consumes gas and oil like nobody's business and would probably cost more to insure. I would certainly not even consider it as being a good versatile family car but rather The King's Chariot. Although I am no fan of MB, I bet it would be more suited to your family situation. Of course if you tell me you have another "family" car, then I would say the decision for the M6 would be a no-brainer! Good luck with your decision:)

Have you considered speccing out this M6 in a dubious color combination and options before refusing it when it arrives? ;) The dealer doesn't deserve your business but I think with a child on the way the only practical option is a 4-door car...
He already has, that's why the stealer is so anxious to get his grubby hands on it!

I have not been in a CLS sedan but you may want to make sure the rear facing care seat fits well in the back. If I recall, there is a tunnel between the 2 rears seats. For me, I have my son's car seat in the middle of the car, which I think provides just a bit more margin of safety. And yes, a 4 door with a baby is the only way. If you go with a 2 door, find a good chiropractor cuz your back will need it.

Got a kid on the way? Get a van for your wife (or you when in small fry chauffer mode) and an M6 (from another dealer) for you to drive when you're alone. We've had a couple of Honda "Oddities" and have been happier when them than the Dodge Caravan we started off with 10 years ago. If you are not the primary kid hauler, a coupe still works but not for daily kid duty.

That is the problem. The salesman is not your friend.
This is a business transaction. If the dealership is willing to lose a long term customer to maximize short term profit, that is just how they choose to run their business.

In my opinion the CLS is one of the most beautiful cars. I did not realize a CLS 63 is cheaper than an M6...

Why do you say its almost difficult to drive?

Have you ever asked a valet or friend to jump in your car to give it a spin? 90% of people can't even take off without herky jerking their way down the road!! The brakes are awesome but abrupt. You have to practice shifting smoothly in SMG Mode and in iDrive it's also quite difficult to learn throttle modulation. Every car mag out there almost bashed the car for how tough it is to drive and these are people that test drive cars for a living!! Don't get me wrong, I love the car but it's only easy to drive for fanatical owners who intensely desire to learn. Get in a Benz in comparison. A chimp could drive the car. Easy, predictable, little if any nuance. That's what I meant by "difficult to drive".
