Cleaning MAF sensor

Ok, searching for "MAF" yielded 2 results and "mass airflow" yielded none.

Surely someone here has cleaned their MAF sensor before? I've got a can of CRC MAF cleaner sitting here. any reasons why I should NOT try this?

M5Dave, no reason at all. Don't touch the MAF wires at all. Spray a bit of that CRC MAF cleaner at a distance of 6-8 inches from the electronics. Let it air dry. That's it. Remember when you put them back that they are directional.

Ditto. It's easy and quick. Don't touch the wires or let them bump into anything when disassembling/reassembling.

Good luck.

thanks guys.. it ended up being pretty easy.

For those who haven't done this.. it's just

1. remove wire connector from MAFs (just squeeze and pull the connectors off)
2. undo 4 torx screws (2 on each side).
3. twist gently in both directions to loosen the rubber seal and pull the MAF sensor out, (carefully). try not to touch anything, especially the shiny mirror surface beneath the plastic and resistor for the air intake temp sensor. Just grip it by the connector end and you should be fine.
4. get a can of CRC MAF CLEANER (make sure its labeled MAF CLEANER, designed for mass air flow sensors - anything else is risky) and like the gentleman said above, spray 6-8 inches from the sensor. This stuff just evaporates quickly and leaves no residue so I wasn't afraid to just drench it. 5. reinstall.. make sure the MAF sensor is facing the right direction. you can look to see where it mates with the MAF tube to ensure its facing the right direction - THIS MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

Not bad for 5 minutes of work.

Yup, I have done it every 10.000 kms. It is super easy and exactly follow the steps above (M5dave). Remember NEVER TOUCH THE WIRES! if you do, you will have to buy a new MAF in which costs around $500.
