Well, I saw only one M5 yet equipped with that option.
And I have to say, that it depends on the colour of the car, wether it fits or not.
The one I saw was anthracite and it didn't look that bad.

Could someone please clarify what chromeline is? Is it a replacement of all the black trim on the rear bumper with chrome, for example?

Chromeline trim is the trim around the windows of the car. Standard, it is black, but you can get chrome around the edges in the no-cost option. Wolf359 has chromeline on his silverstone (I don't know if he has pics available), but I can't recall other people who have it. Pics anyone? It's all based on personal taste.

 

I would not recommend the chrome line exterior as it makes the car look less sporty (again it depends on the colour and your taste). I've heard of a number of owners who ordered this thinking it was another freebie only to regret it later.

 

No need pics to look at. Just compare 540i Automatic (6spds are also black trimmed) versus M5 sideways. There's your chrome and black comparison. If you're going for stealthy and have all your M5 badges and spoiler removed, you might as well add the chrome line to make it look more like a 540iA.
If they offer something to make the exhaust a single downward pipe and a regular 5 series air dam without compromising performance, I would have gone stealthy. But since the dual exhaust and the front are too visible, I might as well go all the way M5. I didn't get the chrome line either.

The chrome trim looks better than the black period. Plus, over time the black trim will oxidize and start fading and develope a chalky look. Mt 1991 M5 and 1995 M3 had the black trime and both started looking chalky after a few years. Go with the chrome.

I dont like the way it looks. but this is not to attack those who do like it. its just a personal choice. if youre doing a poll, just put me down for no.

Today, I see 3 M5's at my company's parking lot. All titanium silver. The only one with chrome line is mine, and I think the shadowline looks better, but oh well, I didn't order this M5, the original owner backed out and I got it.

My opinion is that the shadowline looks better.

 

MHO:

I expect it'd look decent on certain colors, generally darker colors, wouldn't want it on a white or Silverstone car.

It doesn't change the bits between the driver's butt and the throttles, so it doesn't matter that much.

 

I would think that one could easily change the chromeline trim for the gloss shadowline trim. Isn't it just the chrome around the side windows? I dont think the cost would be probibtiive. Remember that the M's shadowline is glossy, not the matt finish of the other shadowline trims.

 

I vote for the shadowline. Regardless of which trim you choose, the important thing is you'll have the fastest production sedan in the US!
