Gawd these M engineers are good!

Anybody have pictures of the F10 550i engine bay, so we can compare?!

Ok, nevermind, I found one. It looks like an almost completely different design. The turbos look WAY bigger. I'm starting to wonder that this engine will be capable of easily producing over 800HP with a tune. :)

It kinda looks confusing:rolleyes: I liked the S85 better.....but it does look way better then the X5\X6M engine.....IMO

Much bigger turbos for sure.. massive engine and you thought there was no space in S85 engine bay..
All that piping for 555hp?.. (i don't think so).. I'll be shocked if this beast is not close to 600hp or more..
With tune..???

Not pretty and Im sure M could have developed a prettier engine shroud but since we dont drive around with
engine bay open it's all good. Just surprise us with 600 hp and the lack of esthtetics is forgiven.

Hm.

I've seen this clip months ago, but do you think the M5 will have 6 or 7 gears ? and will it also make the same noise as you get when changing gears in the x5m/x6m/rs6 v10TT?

BTW i think the m5 will be faster than this x6m. I can't imagine the m5 roll with 750-800 hp under the hood !! :M5rev::M5launch::M5rev:

Wow.. the F10 M5 engine makes the X5M look like a baby version. The turbos are huge.. the intake is huge..

I think were talking 600hp min.

The F10 M5 is DCT 7-Gearbox. Gear 6 brings it to top speed. Gear 7 is an overdrive gear.. for efficiency/luxury.

why are people complaining about the way the engine looks? last time I checked, most people drove their cars, instead of gawking at the engine. although I do admit that I look at my engine bay at least once a month on my S85... to add in a quart of oil!

this looks like some serious business and I'm hoping it's a minimum of 600hp.

Just observations really but nothing wrong with a pretty looking engine since BMW is about engines. Ferrari, Lambo all have their engines under glass for the world to see so they pretty them up somewhat...BMW usually does the same...

Does it really cost that much more to get rid of the ugly plenum covers and put something half decent in there? I mean the M3 GTS had the right idea, except that it was lurid orange. A carbon cover would have been a nice touch. This is a flagship car after all, and if they can fit a whole carbon roof on the M6, a few cosmetic touches in the engine bay would have been very welcome. I remember when the previous M5 came out.. this was a gripe at the time. BMW said they would address all the "issues" from the E60 but it appears the bean counters have won out again

This is a Spy Photo... not official. It's more than likely that the engine bay is NOT final, and the plenum cover shown wont be the one in production.

that's not the plenum, the plenum would now be where the headers are on regular engines... probably doesn't look as pretty as the s85 & s62 ones did though

One thing to keep in mind and consider...

This is a Spy Photo... not official. It's more than likely that the engine bay is NOT final, and the plenum cover shown wont be the one in production.

For example.. when various magazines test drove the F10 M5 in the winter alps, the exhaust tone was not loud at all, and the engineers said that it will be much louder when it is finalized and when it becomes a production ready car, the exhaust will be fine tuned and have a proper tone.

So... this is a spy shot.. and it's safe to say that anything shown that is not bmw official press is NOT final or production ready.

I agree that this might not be the final version/ with the final decoration on it/ BUT it looks to me that it is not a simple drop in of the X5 M motor nor the motor in the B7. This looks like they've really done some unique and I would assume very ///M things to it. So for now, I will daydream about what this will do. My hope is we are looking at power in the high 500s (580+).

I morn the loss of the V10 like most people because as Dinan showed it was designed with a capacity increase in mind. The addition of a duel clutch gearbox would have been a fitting finale for the M5 & M6.

Looking at this engine though I can see that they have been very very clever. Turbos create heat. Heat rises & in standard installations that is going to heat up air getting into the engine, which intern makes it less efficient therefore using more fuel.

With the turbos in the "V" of the engine they are as far away from the air inlet tract as you can get which means a cooler air charge with less area needed for intercooling for the required horse power. Overall it makes the engine very compact.

Maintenance costs should be lower as well as changing the turbos will be much easier than on a conventional turbo engine due to ease of access.

On another note I can see this engine being sold to some sports car makers with the configuration it has due to where the exhaust manifolds exit.

To summarise....I like it. Just wish they had given the V10 the send off it deserved.

there is no need to worry about reaching the 600 hp mark. the x6m and x5m are in the 500 hp mark. just look at the difference in turbo/intercooler sizes here there is at least a 50 hp increase here. by the way must turbo cars when tunes will return increases in the 50 hp mark. look what we are getting with the 550 and 135/535 cars. the new f10 m5 will be a very fast car.
