Oil filter housing tool

I thought I'd share this with you.

It's a tool I'm making to hold the oil filter housing steady whilst undoing the cap, relieving any strain transmitted to them silly-expensive oil filter mounts.

It uses the two 6mm holes in the housing.
It has two 6mm rods that are 34mm apart.
It also has a bend, about 25 to 30 degrees.

I also need to add a couple of bends to raise the handle level above the wing, this is the first run so it's not finished yet. It will be nice and clean and painted in the end.

Here's a picture:

I hope someone finds it useful.

A little update to this.
I've now added a couple of bends to allow the tool to sit flat onto the oil filter housing and its handle to clear the wing nicely.
The bends intorduce about 70mm of difference in height which seems just perfect when it's seated in the housing.

Angle of the bend in it is 30degrees.

Feels very solid and there won't be any worries about tearing the oil filter mounts.

Here's a little picture:

Needs the pins secured (probably a little weld), cleaning up and painting, but it's functional now.

I use the torque value that's printed on the filter cap. It's not much, but it does mean holding the filter housing in some way to relieve the stress on the mounting bolts/studs.

Nice work on the bar!

Impressive work. I just use a rubber strap wrench around the housing to be safe.

I only tighten to the spec given, 25Nm, but this is far easier to hold the housing steady than messing around with some belt type tools, thats all. The cap does tend to stick tightly after time, even after being being torqued correctly. The oil on the rubber 'O' ring dries so it grabs the plastic cap and the aluminium housing a lot. Once you've broken this 'grab' it turns easily.

It hasn't cost me anything really and does its job. I thought I'd share, someone else might fancy making one. For garages, I thought it could be really handy to stop tearing them mounts.
