I don't think I was in the original "original" meet group, but I met many of you guys later at a subsequent meet. I had the '03 LMB car that was destroyed, then I bought the '00 JB car that I sold a year later, and then about a year or two ago (who can remember?) I bought yet another one, another '03 (SG) from a board member in Philly. Unlike the first two garage queens, it had over 110K but had been well maintained. Unfortunately, none of these subsequent cars could relive the magic that was the first one, and I've gotten so spoiled driving new or newish cars that owning a 12 year old car wasn't doing it for me. So I sold that to a young guy out of Virginia who is active on this board now I believe.

Speaking of which, it seems like the tone of this board has changed a bit (not to mention the presentation) since it was bought out.

So now I've got an Audi A6 DD and an E89 (that's the hardtop Z4) for the weekends and to enjoy our lovely early summer weather. The ZedFour is the little itty bitty 4-cylinder with (natch) a manual 6. The 4 cylinder has never been a consideration in the past, but this was a used car (saving me copious quantities of coin) and it's so difficult to find a stick in nearly anything these days, and really, traffic sucks so bad around here that I can rarely use any more horsepower except to briefly merge onto I-40 so that I can then slam on the brakes.

I missed last weekend's C&C but I'll try to make it in July. Hopefully I'll see some of you mutts there.

Actually, maybe not. The last C&C I went to, I nearly bought that guy's sweet Phoenix red E24. Too much temptation, sun beating down on my head, lots of cool cars, it's easy to make a bad decision.

Michael, I have and always will have fond "adventurous" memories of driving your old '00 up to Chicago overnight from Cary and flying back to Raleigh all within 24 hours time. What a great epic road trip that was for me. My brain forgets a lot but never that.

I've always assumed Michael was going to do a nice Roundel story from some local members...lots of potential material.

The board definitely has changed a lot since Gustav sold it. It was his baby and it showed, but now it's simply one more "thing" someone hired by the entity that owns it has to manage and be tasked with extracting equity out of all the members using it.

That was an interesting car selling adventure. Since I have nothing important to do at work today...

I bought the '00 from a guy in Illinois who needed the money to restore his CSL. We did a PPI and I bought the car and had it shipped to NC during the snowiest winter on record. When I got the car, it drove like crap, as it had the original tires on it. They had about 16K miles but 11 years on them. Most PPIs don't check the date code on the tires, so consider this a life lesson. Replaced the tires and fixed the CD changer and the mirror and the pixels and that was all I ever did to that car. But it wasn't for me, so I put it up for sale after a year. I had some interest in it, and one young guy out of Chicago sent me a few emails then we went to texting and over the course of several days of negotiating (think of the scene from "Bad Santa" with Bernie Mac) we agreed on my asking price. He said "I'll have my people arrange the money" and sure enough, the next day his Dad emails me for wiring instructions. Then he says, "I need the car by Friday." This was, I believe, Wednesday. Well, no one is going to ship a car on short notice like that, so I suggest having it driven up. I knew that Brian had a flexible work schedule, so I asked him if he'd like to do it. He had a commitment with his daughter, so he couldn't leave until Thursday evening, and sure enough, around 9 or 10 PM he finally shows up with a bag full of Red Bull and his MP3 player. NC to Chicago is not an easy drive (although there are worse, I'm sure) and he made it with about 3 minutes to spare to catch his return flight.

It was a unique transaction.

Michael,

Speaking of the board, just look at the massive amount of junk each page load floods your browser with on this site. Just loading this page showed 29 items blocked ranging from Facebook, Google, Twitter including analytic tracking from comscore and newrelic, etc, etc. It's a mess now. By the way, if you haven't reverted to the classic forum view, you might want to do that since you've not been on the forum in a while.

Hey, if anyone has a friend or knows of someone who has a project that would make a good story, please let me know. Or if you yourself, for that matter, have a project or story. I'm always on the lookout for a good story.

Your 12 year saga of maintaining the M5 is probably not interesting or unique enough... just sayin'.

How about a BMW V8 brute vs V8 beast battle? Two of the best BMWs ever built...my personal and ongoing enjoyment truly driving my E39 M5 and my E90 M3. I've taken the M5 to the PC Autox/time trial event four times with four FTDs, and the M3 three times now with three FTDs. Awesome cars, something I can't have imagined would ever exist 35 years ago when I joined the CCA. It all started however over 40 years ago for me, this obsession with engineering...fed by my now long missed 1972 Bavaria I won the best Bavaria award with at the 1982 O'fest. It was an incredible car after all the work I did and Ray Korman did to it in the early 80s. Sold it in 1994, it went missing for ages, found it in 2005 in awful condition, but now a restoration shop in TN has found and bought it. Come to think of it, maybe a better story or within this one could involve my 87 year old father who was one of the first 5k members of the club, still driving a BMW...
