Good thoughts, Chuck, but I don't think the S65 is that much lighter when you compare running weights versus fully dressed. More importantly, I understand the crank girdle on the S65 tends to shift under sustained high rpm usage, making it a slightly less reliable platform generally speaking. I am no S65 expert, but these conclusions have been reiterated by some who are S65 experts. The final point is that S62/E46 swaps are now relatively common and the path well trodden, not to mention, somewhat inexpensive. Oh, and did I mention I have an extra low mileage S62 lying around? LOL.

You are picking the cheaper option - unseemly.

You and I disagree about the M5. Mine is currently at about 3100 lbs. dry and getting lighter by the moment (carbon doors and fenders to come and a few other lightening techniques). There are at least two fellows building E39 M5s to campaign in GTS next year. Having driven my M3 at 2725 lbs wet, there is a weight difference no doubt, but it is nowhere near what people think and there is a huge power differential, particular at lower RPMs coming out of hairpin turns. That is where the S62 really shines. Also try some Motons or MCS struts on an M5 sometime. You'll be surprised at how docile it becomes!

All that said, I agree that the M3 has greater potential. Just needs an S62 and full Motec electronics.

S85 is a great motor without a doubt. I understand the valvetrain is particularly stout. But the S85 hasn't won the Rolex 24 hours once, much less five times, as has the S62. So I'm sticking with the S62.
