-Many, many new owners on this board since I was last active.

The "best bang for your buck" is the mod that DOESN'T make your car go BANG. There are no "chips" for the E39, or any post-OBDII BMW. There is software. I would avoid any piggiback systems, as they only work by fooling the OEM software into thinking the engine is doing something it isn't. Full software rewrites are most effective. The only two commercially available that I would trust are Dinan and ESS. I have experience with both, on different cars. Given Dinan's move to public ownership I would currently steer you to ESS.

Otherwise, keep it stock and reliable. S62s are hellishly expensive to rebuild.

I just drove a customers car the other day with his Evolve tune and it automatically puts and keeps the car in sport mode, it just drives like a more modern car

-Do you realize that what you just said was contradictory nonsense? Sport mode in the E39 does nothing for power, it just makes the throttle more hyper-sensative (Which most good drivers think is bad). So unless your meant "modern car" as an insult to the driving dynamic you are doing a disservice to clients by recommending that tune.

+1. I've been away for years, come back and there are still shop trolls. 20-year-old used M5 owners beware: There are many sharks in this ocean and few dolphins.

-If you have a blown E46 M3 and it runs like crap chances are it's an Active tune. Their E39 n/a tune might run ok, but I'd be warey of knock. Some tunes push timing too far and start mild knock (too sublte to hear) that can weaken rods over time.

Best bet is to take it to someone who actually DOES tuning in-house and have them dyno it while hooked up to the DME so they can see if everything is runing well. Off the top of my head that would be ESS or Dinan. Or if you are in SoCal I have on other tuner, that I use, but I have to ask first because he's generally too busy to want more businsess.
