Just to add another viewpoint to this thread, I have a UUC short shifter (no dssr) and I feel the effort is a bit too high for my liking. I've put on ~4k miles, so by no means is it unbearable, just a personal taste. Is it short and solid? Absolutely - movement is minimal and very positive gear engagement. But the effort gliding into gear is a bit more than I like (I came from a honda civic, so keep that in mind!).

I've driven a z3 shifter and an e36 with steel bushings (IIRC) and a short shifter, and apparently those fellas are gorillas - so it's not like there aren't others out there loving shifters with far more effort than mine too.

My intention is to give an e60 short shifter a try.

2001 Carbon Black on Caramel - 127k miles - Selling this year, sadly. Time to move on.

from a noob standpoint, what is exactly the point, and or change in "feel" associated with changing the shifter length??

It's just exactly that, a shorter shift from gear to gear. It's all just personal preference and having a shorter shift, you usually feel like it's more "crisp" and connected to the car.

Did you mean e60 545, or the m5? Is there a difference?
