Blown Engine 2015 M5! BMW Wont fix!

Hi Guys,

Long story... a while back my 2015 M5 with about 23k miles had a tiny bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust. You could BARELY see it... just a wisp from time to time. It was due for reg service so I took it in. They said they couldn't find anything wrong so I brought it back and when I went to pick it up they rolled it down with a drive train malfunction and it was shaking, backfiring and hardly idling. Obviously it went back to the dealer.

After about a week they said they had to call in BMW corp to investigate it as they couldn't figure it out. The first thing was they blamed it on my down pipes. That was absurd and I fought that so then they blamed it on the tune I had on the car. I asked for them to share with me their finding and how they got to that conclusion that it was to blame. They refused to tell me anything. The dealership I met with the GM and service manager and they were on my side and said they were doing everything possible to help but that their hands were tied w/ BMW once the corp techs were on it. They told me to escalate it with BMW NA and they would support me.

I filed my complaints with BMW NA and was blown off 3x. I had to continue to follow up with calls and emails for 2 weeks just to get their attention on the matter. Finally when I did I was given a very generic response of it was the tune and not a warranty fix and I was out of luck. I kept pushing and finally got to a specialist manager who said they would do a full investigation and go on site to my car. After a week and a half I called to try and get the results. At this time they informed me they could no longer speak to me via email only on the phone. They refused to give me any service notes or details on their diagnosis or anything that happened with my car. I kept pushing very nicely and professionally that I need to know how they determined this. The told me to get those notes "I could sue them." Otherwise they would not disclose any details and they didn't have to.

I continued to press my case very nicely and was only met with terrible customer service and even rudeness from BMW NA management. Finally after 2.5 months I gave in and spent $44k for a new short block to be installed.

I am fed up and ready to go to an attorney due to the principal on this matter.

Lastly my wife's 2017 X5M just had a chassis malfunction which is modification free. These cars seem like they're made of glass now. Having owned 20 BMW's going back to my 2001 M3 I felt I was treated so horribly as a loyal customer.

Any thoughts or feedback is appreciated.

I was also denied any photos of my engine, the blown piston, my old shortblock and any photos of it.

Sorry to hear. Sounds like the entire company is going to ****. Back when my 540i6 had a slight tranny issue. I called BMW NA and they immediately took care of it. Just as the CPO warranty was expiring. And it was my first BMW bought used!
Obviously you have the financial means to deal with this, and maybe your 'loyalty' only allows them to exploit this.
I would sue, like you said, on principle. During discovery they will have to disclose everything.

It really is going to ****... what has happened?

I currently have a 2017 X5M, 2016 M6, 2015 M5, 2015 535i, 2016 528i, 2016 X3, 2017 530i and 2x 2017 740i's all on lease for my company.

They couldn't even treat me with decent customer service, it was flat out rude and I was constantly ignored.

Additionally I was told no loaner cars were available and I am going on 2 weeks still unable to get one. A rental was not offered and I've been Ubering back and forth to work. It used to be loaner cars were a given always. The last 18 months it's been pulling teeth to get one no matter which dealership I go to.

I had a very similar situation and after about 6 weeks they paid for it all

Why you waste so much money on leasing Bmw's if you can get better reliability out of Lexus for example?

I'm afraid to say that if you've modified the exhaust and the engine management programming you will have a hard time getting it fixed under warranty as it gives them a perfect get out. That doesn't take anything away from poor customer service or refusing to share their findings with you. A poor show from what is supposed to be a premium brand.

Good luck with whatever course you take.

Sounds like suing would be like throwing good money after bad money. Unfortunate turn of events for op, and would seem modding should only be done after warranty has expired to stop stealerships having a get out clause.

Damn man.... this is disheartening to hear... As I too own about 4 bmws myself two of which are X5M and M5. This is terrible terrible service and makes you wonder what happened to BMW... I've always been a BMW loyal customer but to read this was just upsetting.

Sorry man I really hope you get a resolution, I can tell you that TECHS make all the difference. Luckily I know a tech at BMW and he always looks out and take care of my cars even when one is t under warranty

I tried that.. They refused to show any diagnosis whatsoever and claimed all the data was private.
