The last few days I've had a periodic howling sound coming from under the hood. It seems to be coming from the power steering system and I can even feel it through the steering wheel and the howling sound changes when I move the wheel. There are no warning lights coming on but it's also associated with the rpm's of the engine as it changes when I rev the engine. I would just take it in to get checked (still under warranty) but I live about 4 hours from the nearest BMW dealership. It's strange because sometimes it makes the sound and sometimes it doesn't. Anyone else ever experience this?
Have you checked the power steering fluid level? It might need a top up. Sometimes condensation gathering over time in the fluid can also cause the pump to be noisy.
my car recently started doing exactly this it seems to happen if i have just nailed it right through the rev range in second gear and then braked hard followed by turning into a side road, other than that mine never makes a sound, if i turn it off the noise and the vibration in the steering wheel goes away when engine is restarted. weird eh
Have the steering wheel pump checked for a faulty bearing and also check the belt moving the pump for possible slacks.
Good luck,
George
