Picked up an M5, broke on the way home - LFA

Hi all,

Last Saturday i picked up my E60 M5, 2007 LCI with 65k on the clock. On paper the car is perfect, had alot of common faults already fixed, and has had a warranty most of its life so it has wanted for nothing. The drive home was about an hour, however about half way home i eventually got the car on the motorway and let it wind on in 4th gear P500S to above 7k RPM. After returning to normality, about 20 - 30 seconds later the car went into limp mode with an engine fault. Very rough running, severe misfiring etc. Drove a few miles further to the next exit, pulled up the trafffic lights with a LOT of smoke and very strong smell of fuel. I pulled over and switched it off, went to restart it and it failed to start - after a few turns it simply locked (hydro locked im sure). Got the car trailered back to the warehouse where i work and plugged my code reader in. Many many cylinder misfire with cut-off codes, lambda reading codes, fuel pressure error. Oil cap stinks of fuel, car swallowed roughly a quarter of a tank in the few miles it was driven.

I contacted the dealer and eventually took the car back last night to his independent specialist who has been looking after the car for the last 5 years.

I have not heard anything back yet, assuming the worst, i am looking for some advice on aspects of the engine i want checking before taking the car back. I would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks

Alex

Sounds like an injector stuck open. Hope you didn't bend a con rod.

Also, 2007 is not LCI.

It's pretty much the only thing not done along with the usual vanos bits.

Yes i had assumed this too, assuming no bent rods, could there be other damage even if the engine restarts and appears to be ok?

It is LCI, at least the interior is, i assumed one of the first.

My bad, forgot about europe where LCI may have rolled out earlier. Headlamps and interior are certainly LCI, but front bumper is missing the side reflectors. Then again maybe europe LCI's never had bumper reflectors.

As for the hydrolocking... assuming it's a fuel injector it may be ok. I'd ask for compression and leak down testing and go from there.

I hope so too man, spoke to the dealer yesterday who said the indy had ordered some parts for it. Assuming bent rods & scored bores, can these be picked up in compression tests? (Mainly the scored bore).

Not sure what my move should be if the engine is now in bad shape:

- Ask for my money back?
- Push for a replacement / rebuild?

Thanks

Alex

Had a call earlier, apparently Injector 8 had failed, compression test came back with all cylinders ~8bar.

Going to replace all 10 injectors and swap out the oil.

Is a compression test really much use here? What about leakdown for bore scoring? How do you identify bent rods? Engine tear down? Im learning here still so sorry for the stupid questions.

Thanks for the help.
