Looking to buy an E61 M5 2008

Hello there, this is my first foray into proper full M car. I have a M140 and I am going to look at a 2008 M5 touring on Monday.

I have enquires about it’s history: clutch/flywheel 4k Mike’s ago, one of the throttle actuators replaced, good service history mixed BMW and specialist, 3 owners including the current one. Brakes and tyres are recent.

It’s black with black leather.

The current owner has only had it 8 months, apparently wants to get into a 911.

Is there anything I can do when I go to see the car, anything I should/can look for, anything that I haven’t asked already?

Mileage is just over 71k.

If you have ISTA or inpa take it with you and check the possible error codes when going to test drive. If RB's aren't done consider to change those. I have also E61 M5 allmost same mileage. My RB's was changed around 65000 miles. No copper visible but pretty weared. If it have panorama sunroof check that the water drain hoses are cleaned regurally. You don't wan't to add individual option "indoor pool"😀 Trunk wiring and diversity amplifier tends to go bad and broken. I'll say go for it if the car feels and sounds good. Tourings are pretty rare. Are you in the US or EU?

I don’t have any code readers or equipment like that unfortunately. I’ll try to check the panoramic sunroof- any idea how? Certainly want to avoid that option!! 💦

I’ve read something about the wiring in the rear of the car so will just have to see how that goes!

Are there any visible tell tale signs of something ominous I can look for?

Also, any recommendations for M specialist garages in Scotland? 👍

If you buy the car get ISTA software in your laptop. Your definitely need it some point😀

Check the trunk area if there is sign of water. If not, your good. My advice is to clean those water pipes once a year.

Trunk wiring is easy to fix if some problems show up.

Listen the engine that there is no rattle or clicking/ticking sounds, also check if there is any leaks. Good engine will idle very smooth after engine is warmed up.

Check oil change intervals from the car records.

SMG could be sluggish in slow speeds but that's the nature of it. Test car in M-mode and give it a good push.

At some point you may need to pour some cash in the car but that's life😀 V10 sound is so addictive and gives me smiles everytime when i start her.

Also curious how you like M5 vs M140 after you drive the car. M140 is very fast and nice car but the M5 has something special and brute feeling which i don't have with other models. Could be the NA V10😀

I’m hoping I’ll be able to get the power down a lot smoother with it being a real proper M car! Can’t wait to hear that V10!!🤩

You must check for any water ingress in the battery compartment with the E61's including the M5. Make sure all the modules can be read using a code reader

Other thing to note is BMW warranty. On or below 69,999 the cost is OK. 70,000 and above the price is outrageous. The things to look out for are actuators, rod bearings, clutch * flywheel. Make sure the clutch & flywheel has been done recently. See here https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Login/Index

Steve Lewis aka Mr Vanos (instagram) is always doing rod bearing work on the S85 so it might be wise to have a quick word with him about anything bearing related i.e. what miles S85's are spinning bearings on average, anything to listen/look out for

At slow speeds the SMG does take some getting used to. You have to keep reminding yourself its a manual gearbox with an electronic clutch. The ZF in the M140i is quickkk! and the E61 M5 gearbox is 100years behind lol .... BUT when everything works as it should and you've got an open road ahead of you which in Scotland i'm sure theres many (NC500 cough cough) dare I say there's nothing that delivers the same driving experience. What an epic motor that V10 Touring M5 will be

Well Iíve taken the plunge!!!
Sound is awesome and Iím already smitten with the M button!!

It had a throttle actuator fitted on the 8th- was meant to have been done in 2016 but one was dated 2008 other 2016, the 2008 one had failed and so was replaced. Clutch was done 4K miles ago.

I will get it into a bm specialist ASAP for an o service and a full check. Rod bearings will be on the agenda.

Any recommendations for specialists in the Glasgow area?

Iím only half way home too, 3 more hours of V10 to go!! 😀
