Whats the consensus on removing these air box filters?

I read that some owners had removed these carbon filters so I gave it a go and popped them out with no issue. Now Im wondering if they were protecting the Mass Air Flow sensor or something as upon inspection ( after pulling them out of course, lol ) I see some small debris in the pleats. Anyone had any issues with them out after some miles on the car post removal?

They came out easily by slipping two of the thicker feeler gages into the groove on opposite sides to a corner and bending upward so I can easily put them back. Thanks in advance !
