is this engine worth fixing? the labor is very cheap where I live.... is it likely that the crank is not serviceable?

Most likely will require a weld build up and grinding on the crank to fix. Where are you located? A google search will show some places that repair this crank. It's a fairly significant effort though to split the bedplate, remove it, replace it and all the bearings, and reseal it properly. Cheap labor probably is going to be proficient labor with this motor.

Cheap labor sometimes not working properly with these cars.
If u are going to rebuild properly u will be just in gaskets and bearings around 3500$ (main bearings, rod bearings, piston rings, bolts, head gaskets)
If u are looking for cheapest way - that is junkyard 6000$ engine, they should warranty it for at least 6 months, try to get it from a big company.
And no, this is not 500$ repair if u decide to go with cheap repair in a garage that never had this car before they will end up changing bearings, and in 60-90 miles (depending how you will drive) u will have same knock or worth scenario hole in the oil pan.
Good luck, i feel your pain, i was in the same boat almost 2 years ago.
LMK if u decide to sell your car

This must be hurting me to say.
the sound is universal for any car on Earth,
you spun your bearings.
Definitely not Vanos rattle or Vanos pump
if anybody tell you otherwise, they are trying to sell you into the hell.

Good Luck
