Red cog of death, no start, no power to smg hydraulics, shifter stuck in neutral

New owner of a 06 E60 M5 SMG, 112K on the clock. If any other info is needed please let me know. New to BMW... I've been with Audi,VW 30+ years, own and am very good with their VAG-COM software. So far... I feel BMW's software (so many different softwares) has me spinning in circles. I'm a tightwad and I'm persistent, I don't recall taking a vehicle to a dealer or indi in over 30+ years and I don't intend to now.

I have been reading on the forum as much as I can but want to keep my focus in one place.

As for my story leading up to it sitting on jack stands....

A week after I purchased the car I was getting the yellow cog and finally the red cog of death would come on randomly which would not let me shift into gear without restarting the car. I drove like this for awhile but knew something had to be done. I purchased a laptop and dongle from ebay with GT1, ISTA-D, ISTA-P and a bunch of other software I don't know how to operate very well. I plugged the software in and messed with it and now the car won't start at all and I've noticed the smg hydraulic motor/pump isn't priming anymore when I open the door. I dropped the access plates off the bottom and unplugged the smg pump motor and tested the leads... sure enough, no power when I open the drivers door.

I realize I still probably need to pull the smg unit and do a motor replacement to hopefully cure the death cogs but now I'm even further in the hole scratching my head wondering why no power to the hydro unit and the car not starting at all.

Oh... I replaced the two relays everyone associates with the smg pump/motor with new ones and nothing.

Figure the shifter is stuck in neutral due to no hydraulics.

At one time I was able to access the car with GT1 software but now it says the interface isn't working... says something about terminal 15 and battery voltage less than 9 volts (even though it's fully charged). I was able to access with Ista-P but now can't figure that out anymore either.

Frustrated, so much so that I'm considering parting the damn thing out to get some of my $$$ back.

If anyone is willing to help I'm all ears.

I first need to figure out why I'm not getting any power to the smg hydros, since I've replaced the relays with no luck... is there a fuse somewhere I'm not finding? I've looked at every single fuse in the glovebox and the rear passenger side of the trunk... is there another fuse block I'm missing?

Maybe this isn't where I need to start?

If codes are needed I'll have to try and pull them again tomorrow.

A minutes worth of thinking can save hours worth of doing.

Im no expert but you might just need a new battery for the car. I know they start acting weird when battery voltage gets low and nothing works like its suppose to. Just a hint i might be wrong though...

Sounds like something that I just went through with dead battery replacement in my car. I couldn't get ISTA to communicate with my DME or SMG computer. Long story short I had to disconnect my SMG commuter to wake the system up again. However, you definitely have signs of week battery for starters.

hook up a battery charger and retest everything with it on. The car is an energy hog.

I'll throw in a new battery tomorrow and see what happens.

Do I need to reset anything for only changing a battery?

Also... where is the smg control module you suggested I unplug?

Any fuses for the smg I'm missing?

I would try a battery charger before I put a new battery in it.

Generally, its much easier to diagnose and fix it when you start getting the yellow cog.

Do you have the maintenance history of the car.

I've thrown on a charger and it runs the battery up to 100%, almost as soon as I start fiddling with the car it drops to 25% which is telling me I have something up with the battery. I just picked one up and am going to toss it in.

No... no service history unfortunately.

Update after new battery....

Still no start...

Was able to connect with ISTA-D and pull the following codes. (keep in mind I've been fiddling with the car.... some of these codes came up because I had things disconnected I believe).

Here are the faults I was able to pull.

00278F - DME: Intelegent battery sensor, communication (I had unplugged this and tried to start the car once)
00279B - DME: Alternator communication fault
004F40 - SMG: Hydraulic unit: Undershooting of pressure range (this is telling me that the electric motor is failing or has failed)
004F42 - SMG: Hydraulic control unit: activation frequency pressure build-up
004F42 - SMG: Hydraulic unit: ON period
004F64 - SMG: Test programs
004FA0 - SMG: Clutch (activation, position deviation)
005100 - SMG: Hydraulic temperature sensor (I had unplugged this as I started removing the unit from the car)
005101 - SMG: Hydraulic pressure sensor (I had unplugged this as I started removing the unit from the car)
00520A - SMG: Signal, steering angle, is faulty (DSC)
005405 - SMG: Gear lever, LED +/- (S/D)
009323 - LM: Supplementary turn indicator, left, faulty
0093AD - KGM: Micro-power module, no power supply
0093B2 - ACSM/MRS: Safety Battery Terminal
009C54 - IHKA: AUC sensor
009D12 - SINE: Internal battery
00A0B2 - CAS: Supply, terminal 30E/30L
00A0B5 - CAS: fault, road speed signal
00A41A - KBM: Voltage, power window drive, rear passenger side (I had the back window open)
00CDC1 - DME: SMG,CAN message 1
00CDC2 - DME: SMG,CAN message 2
00CDC3 - DME: SMG,CAN message 3
00D357 - No message (transmission, 0x 186, receiver DSC, transmitter
00D35D - No message LDM (0x419), receiver DSC, transmitter LDM

At this point the SMG hydro motor and sensors were plugged back in. ISTA-D allwed me to clear all the fault memory so I did. I then re-ran a test and it came back with two faults (see below).

00279B - DME: Alternator communication fault
009C54 - IHKA: AUC sensor

For some odd reason the gearshift leaver now moves freely but the dash display doens't show it moving out of Neurtral "N".... It still also remains with a "!" exclamation point inside a triangle next to the "N"

Still no power to the SMG Hydraulic unit when opening the drivers door.

Still stumped

Update

5 hours after the new battery was put in the SMG hydro pump primed and it started.

I have no clue why.

Now on to the next problem....

Can anyone diagnose my SMG problems based on the codes I provided above?

Right now it's my plan to put a new motor on the SMG hydro unit. I'm just not sure if I need a clutch position sensor..... new clutch or ????

One thing at a time.... any suggestions?
