2006 M5 Rattle at Idle

Hello everyone, I just bought a beautiful M5 which is now my project. When I start it up, it makes a loud rattle only at idle and stays like that whether warm or cold. After I rev it just to about 1500 rpm, it's completely normal. It drives real smooth but if I push it to redline, it throws an engine light and goes to limp mode. Codes are for air flow, and and a bunch of stuff that obviously is BMW specific but my generic can't read. Previous owner says that a shop said it was the oil pump but I suspect something else. What do you guys think and recommend? If anyone is in the Dallas area, I'd love to take it to you and buy you a beer. Thanks.

Oh, I definitely agree. Seems very likely. I guess really what I'm struggling on is, where do I go from here? Replace the solenoids, maybe? And also, what is even a normal noise to expect, you know? I've been reading that a lot of M5's sound like a diesel and even BMW claims it's normal but that's just weird that every car is different lol.

Do not drive this car. Or you will have bigger issues, this very serious problems

If it's not the vanos, then could be rod bearings. Only way to tell is to open it up and check for damages. Driving, heck, running the engine is not recommended whatsoever, as that could totally kill the s85.

Step 1:Tow it to a shop as soon as possible and pray for the best.

Step 2: Get checkbook, credit card, warranty, stocks and bonds ready for repairs.

Did it sound like this when you bought it or did it develop after purchase? If it was like this at purchase I hope you got a great deal.
I agree with the other people that say do not run it like this until you figure out what you're dealing with.

wow thats really loud. safe to say after listening to this video my m5 is running good.

In the old E39s, a VANOS rattle like that - extremely diesel - meant wear and tear within the VANOS itself, specifically the fit inside a metal ring that had worn. I haven't heard of any rebuild service for the E60 M5s....

Have you tried using a mechanic's stethoscope (or screwdriver with the handle in your ear) to isolate if it's the right or left bank?
