M Settings with no iDrive

I just bought an '06 M5 at a decent discount due in part to the idrive not being functional. I have not done any troubleshooting yet to determine the issue (MPM, finding faulty unit on MOST loop etc.).

In the event it is a faulty CCC I have been researching the feesibility of forgoing idrive for a custom made carputer (raspberry pi with LCD e.g.). A new CCC or CID retrofit brings little to the table, given that they are outdated.

The major issue I have is not having access to M drive settings. Is there a way to access these outside of iDrive? What system handles the M settings? Within the CCC or could I access these through the pi somehow? Can I just toss out the CCC without losing M drive settings?

I haven't actually tried the m button when my wife's CCC crapped out; I've got a sneaking suspicion that the CCC unit re-broadcasts the relevant CAN messages to each one of the modules (DRC/HUD/ECU etc) when the m button message is received by it.

The CCC is just a GUI for the M settings. I believe they are stored/managed in the DME...if you go into DME with INPA you can see all the set configurations present for M mode. M mode works without the radio, this I know for sure as I can feel the M button change throttle if pressed when cruising
