What happens to the car when a solenoid fails in an S85 engine?

Hello all,

I ran the DIS test on the solenoids in my S85 engine and one of them was just out of range. The other 3 were just within range. What happens when a solenoid goes bad? Are solenoids something to be replaced proactively or do I wait until I get a failure to replace it?

Given the current cost of them I imagine it doesn't make sense to replace all 4 if one has gone bad.

Crap. Deleted my post. I thought you meant ignition solenoids. But it implied VANOS actuator solenoids. A solenoid is a coil, part of the motor structure in the actuator. Sorry for the confusion. See next post for the answer :-)

Nothing happens when the solenoids fail really. No error codes most of the time aswell, almost all the time no codes or CEL to be honest.

I drove around for almost 3 years with failed vanos solenoids and i didnt even know..
Most guys have failed solenoids and dont even know it.

Loss of low end response and tq, and idle fluctuation sometimes is what is the outcome of failed solenoids with 'not ok' test parameters.
