Possible vanos noise. Advice required please

Looking for some advice here.

Started hearing a noise on idle a few days ago, it's like 3 additional clicks over the normal E60 M5 idle noise that occur every 20 seconds or so. Sound similar to a noisy lifter. Engine speed seems to have no effect on the frequency really and the noise can't really be heard once the revs pic up as the normal noise drowns it out.

I've added a video link but it's hard to hear. I can feel the tapping as a vibration when I place my hand on the vanos line at the front of the engine.

Only way to know is to test the vanos system..

Run the Vanos test via DIS/INPA see the results, and then Bleed the vanos system twice over... See if things get better.

Checking the vanos pressure via a mechanical gauge would also be your best bet to make sure you dont have a leak within your Vanos system.

usually buzzing noises are associated with vanos noise on these cars.

I have ran a bleed and definitely got some noises I've never had while running one (sounded like air trapped in a pump type of noises). However the tapping is still definitely present. It's more frequent than initially stated (about every 5 seconds), it hasn't changed I judt got it wrong originally. The noise foes become ever so slightly more frequent when the revs are raised but after much above 2000 rpm the normal noises drown it out. It seems yo be present at all temperatures and doesn't get better or worse.

Might not be the vanos.. Run the Vanos solenoid test , post results... Also see if you can contact a shop or a bmw dealer to test the Vanos oil pressure.. or DIY.

I've run tests before and as stated some aspects of the solenoids are slightly out of spec but the general number measurement is within spec. It's typically the amp draw or adjustment time that is out but only sometimes.

Will it need to be a BMW specialist? None that I know of near me. It is definitely from the front of the engine near the top I'd say.

Hard to say, if your vanos solenoid value's are not total crap, it might not be the pressure. At that location of the sound, testing the vanos oil pressure would be a good idea..

This is the bmw pressure adapter kit, you would still need a 2000psi gauge and some other connections aswell.

Going to the dealer to ask for a pressure test might be cheaper, getting a quote cant hurt..

Yeah the solenoid values are pretty reasonable. Last time (admittedly last month) i got .85 on all 4 solenoids but the mA draw was slightly high on 2 and on 1 the adjustment time was slightly too long. The 4th was OK and within all specs.

I'll call BMW later today and enquire. I really am hoping it's not the pump and maybe it's a pulley or something.
