7 speed manual

Why didn't BMW come out with a 7 spd manual? Why doesn't BMW come out with a 7 spd manual? It would be cool, like the new corvettes. Just a thought.

The manual transmission is already a low volume seller for BMW. Doing all the work to create or even use another car's 7 speed is not worth it for a company like BMW.

They say the F90 M5 will not be sold in the US with a manual and it will be a special order in Europe, the default transmission is DCT. Seems BMW might stop offering a manual in M cars in the near future and GULP at all in any model. If BMW stops offering a manual completely whats the chance anyone does in 5-10 yrs from now. Will be a very sad day when the 3 pedal machine is no longer made.

Would there be any *actual* benefit from a 7-speed manual? I don't think much besides being able to say "it's got a 7-speed manual"...

Well the SMG has 7 gears and its ratios are more helpful than the 6 spd manual. Has there ever been a 6+ speed manual in a modern production car?

The current Corvette has had a 7spd manual since 2014.

7 speed would be useful for highway cruising. A lot of 6 speeds are pretty tightly spaced.

There really is little purpose in having a 3 pedal/1 clutch (traditional) manual once the car's weight to power ratio drops below 9.0 lb/hp.

Manuals make sense in the GTI/R, Focus ST/RS, Fiesta ST, M135i/M235i, Civic Si/Type R, Mini Cooper JCW, etc.

In these 600 hp, 4,400 lb sedans, etc. (many with AWD) it makes zero sense. You are spending all of this cash on a high powered engine developed for the car and you are wasting probably 150 hp worth of that via slow shift times and no launch control.

The real debate is between dual clutch, torque converter, or wet clutch 2 pedal automatic designs. I think the dual clutch is the sportiests, but the lines may further blur in the future.
