Unique steering issue - need help diagnosing.

Hey guys,

So a few weeks ago, I started noticing an odd vibration in the steering wheel. It occurs at speeds above 60mph and only when in normal, non M mode. The car tracks straight with no steering wheel vibration, but when I wiggle the steering wheel back and fourth by only a few degrees, I can feel a vibration that gives the steering a notched effect. As if the electronic steering assist is turning on late or turning on and off.

I turned to the usual suspects, wheel balance, alignment, had wheel hubs and bushings checked and replaced brakes/rotors. No cigar.

Has anyone ever had this issue? Do I need to replace my servotronic valve or clean the steering angle sensor? Any help would be appreciated.

Your front wheels have spacers?
Also check your front wheel tire rod assembly. I had the same issue but fixed after replacing tire rod assy on both front wheels. I also had spacers I didnt know were there. So not sure which one fixed it, but no more vibrations /shimmering for me.

The E60 M5 has hydraulically assisted steering, not electrically assisted.

Have you checked the fluid level? It sounds like a pump/rack issue with the assist mechanism.

I would look at the fluid as well. Has it been flushed lately? In Feb. of this year, my steering started making noises suddenly. As it turns out, this happened after a severe braking incident. The reservoir burped out a gush of fluid through the reservoir's weep hole just under the cap (and ended up low. A 'dumb' design that has been carrier forward for years! When you steer, the pump pulls the fluid level down in the reservoir and "sucks air" when just too low which led to a sudden change in feel. Why that happens only in non-M mode is a bit mysterious, but I believe the ballistics of this system are altered in M mode which may make it more noticeable in non-M mode as I expect it provide *more* power assist.

Nope no spacers. I had everything checked and there were no bushing issues.

I will definitely check the fluid as that is exactly what happened. I braked hard to avoid an accident and noticed the problem after that. Thanks guys I will keep you updated!
