Ok - so it looks like this review needs a bit of updating. here are my car's stats before I begin:
- 2008 e60 M5
- charcoal delete
- RPI scoops (no block off plates)
- AFE filters (not the BMC cotton filters)
- and a bunch of aesthetic stuff
I've had my car now for about 3 years, and I've always been looking and researching a tune for the e60 beast. it seems the tunes from other reviews seem to enhance the natural abilities of the e60 m5. I narrowed it down to the Dinan, AA, and Evolve.
I finally made a somewhat impulse buy after 3 years of research to the Evolve r Alpha N MAF Delete tune just a week ago.
$1570 includes the 'coding' capability and shipping (still waiting for the cable almost 2 weeks after the initial shipment of the other equipment).
Initial impression of preparation and difficulty - VERY EASY. I'm kind of computer technical, but not very car technical, and even I can do it.
the package from London looks like this:
- interface USB cable
- ODBC connector
- MAF replacement covers
- replacement cable for thermistor
The first thing I did was install the software from Evolve on my laptop - Simple. Every thing looks exactly as the manual shows upon installation and read of your ECU. the first read and analyzation takes about 45 minutes.
no need to worry about your battery giving out. as long as your laptop has a decent charge, you should be ok to read the car's ECU for 45 mins. again, the instructions are exactly like the manual.
I emailed the file to Evolve Tuning the evening of Thursday EST and I received the 'tuner file' the next morning on Friday. Very FAST! the only problem was that a prerequisite was to delete the MAFs and place the thermistor before implementing the Evolve R Alpha N tune. The kit had absolutely ZERO instructions so Mateen at Evolve Tuning sent me some rather technical questions that had car mechanic vernacular that I didn't quite understand, so I looked in this board and found this link which helped A LOT!
here are some step by step pictures of what I did to supplement the instructions above:
Instead of soldering the wires to the wires under the MAF connector wires, I used the same methodology as the link above:
only problem is that the e60 MAF connector is much smaller than the e39 I believe is what the original instruction was for, so I literally cut the connector in half in order to fit:
then, per Evolve instructions, you simply unscrew the stock MAFs and remove:
MAF unscrewed and removed - do this for both passenger and driver's side MAFs
then remove the MAF Sensor from the connector by depressing the two clips on either side of the MAF connector. pull FIRMLY on the MAF sensor to remove:
Cap the passenger side MAF sensor hole with the cap provided by Evolve:
then secure the MAF connector somewhere out of the way - this is how I did it:
on the driver's side, replace the MAF hole with the cap that has the hole in it and firmly push the new thermistor in the provided hole. you may have to attach the thermistor before you secure the holed cap which is what I did because of the force you have to 'pop' it in the hole:
once secure in the hole, plug the wires from the new wire/thermistor connector into the stock MAF connector into slot 1 and 3 - apparently it doesn't matter which wire goes to which. the wires under the rubber wire connector reveal the wire #s:

then I plugged my newly crimped connectors on the stock MAF side instead of soldering as recommended by Evolve. My way seemed cleaner:
I then zip tie that remaining driver's side cables and newly connected stock (previous) MAF connector cleanly away:
once the physical labor is done, follow the software upload instruction to the tee and viola, ECU program complete! Takes literally about 5 minutes to update the file received from Evolve Tuning as opposed to the 45 mins it takes to read your car's initial data:
Now for the exciting part. The REVIEW of the tune.
- you definitely do have to drive the car around for at least 35-50 miles in order for the ECU to adapt to road conditions, driving style, and air flow, etc
- I'm now 84 miles into the tune and the difference is pretty phenomenal
- at 400 and conservative shift settings, when you floor the pedal, the downshift is much swifter, with kind of a extra 'kick' into the lower gear launching you forward much faster than stock
- at 500 and ///M mode, the response is even crisper especially when in manual mode
- ///M mode is INSANELY faster than stock - ludicrously fast but stable. very quick to reach the PREVIOUS limit which was 155 mph. I was in ///M mode entering a freeway here in Florida in 1st gear going 45-50 MPH with the new high rev RPM of 8500 (this scared me, as the engine was screaming to shift)
- once I shifted into 2nd at nearly 60 mph, my rear tires "SQUEEKED" into second (never happened before), then hauled *** to a quick 155-->160 MPH and left behind a stock Panama S in my dust who tried to keep up
- all of the shifts seem so much smoother and natural for the car in all modes
- it is true from the other reviews that the tune really makes the car a much better 'driver's car' without all the jerkiness of stock
- secondary CATs delete - reprogram of Evolve software for CATless setup ($150 I think)
- tempted to muffler delete or RPI exhaust, but like being a "sleeper car" with my 19 month old daughter's Recaro car seat in the back ;-)
