We also warranty them for 2-years or 30k miles.

Rebuilding an S85 "correctly" will run you around $6000, and that is a spun-bearing motor. If the injector locked up, you are back another $2500 for sleeves in the block.

If you just throw it together and go the cheap route and try to flush the metal out of everything, it will probably get your cost down to around $2500 in parts. However, getting that motor to stay out of limp mode will be next to impossible. The motor is too smart and it knows if the motor had metal in the vanos units, solenoids, etc and it will stay in limp mode until you change those parts.

This is a $52000 motor for a reason and people don't rebuild them correctly for a reason, because the parts are too much money. This is no Chevy 350. ;-P

To change bearings, rod bolts, & vanos line is significantly easier than a full-on rebuild that requires machining, etc. ;-). Anything can be done, it just depends on how much money it makes sense to throw at it.

The reman motors I have, we sell for $10k, the used motors we sell for $6k + core ~ which is significantly less money.

also guys keep in mind one thing. not many mechanics in america will want to do a rod bearing job (even though its easy as shit to a legitimate experienced mechanic) because of lack of experience, and most importantly, it's an expensive job on their part and they might not have sufficient shop resources to do it. it's also a really big headache to get to the oil pan. of course do this enough times (troy, raikku, duschanio) and it's pretty easy. but when they aren't a lot of s85 to work on, less mechanics are educated/experienced with it, it won't be easy to find someone to do it without them asking ridiculous prices. case in point someone in another thread stated his local BMW dealer told him 50 hours LOLOLOLOLOL

got that bit of info from my mechanic uncle who's done 2 s85 rod bearing jobs

I don't sell them because I would have to mark it up to sell the parts I guess ~ but I am more than happy to help you with finding the parts you need. The list of parts needed is actually really simple, although the 702/703 bearings are on back order as of last Wednesday. I bought the remaining 55 bearing shell sets in the country or so I was told that...lol. Some were from a cali dealer, Vegas dealer, and another set from somewhere in Miami. ;-)

I was told BMW is going to be changing the 702/703 and moving to yet another bearing part # within the next few months, so they are not really focusing on replenishing the inventory in the USA with the current bearings. We shall see soon enough.

Can you contact me id like to talk to you about buying a rebuilt motor with either 0 miles or a used motor with rod bearing issue fixed. I have 94k miles heard no sounds out of normal(I can hear when car is 0.3L short on oil) and when vanos went out mechanic took a look and 9,& 10 rod bearing no lead left all copper has left groves in the crank so looks like new motor for me! Hi Troy, I live in the UK so unfortunately won’t be able to use your shop for works to be done. I have just stripped my motor to find 1 main bearing (the rear nearest the flywheel) spun. I’m rebuilding the engine myself and wondered if you would mind giving me advice on the way through of rebuilding. First off my crank is being sent off to be checked for fractures or cracks. Then will be re nitrided and ground and then polished. I need to have my crankshaft bed plate reworked and then the whole thing line bored with the block to make sure it’s good. Are there any pointers you can give to me? Thanks in advance.
