RD Sport 5.8 Stroker Progress Report

My 08 M5 is now in the hands of RD Sport in Anaheim and as you can see from the photos, the engine is out, and the block is at the machine shop to be bored for the latest generation Mahle pistons. The bespoke billet crankshaft is in and it's an amazing piece of automotive art and technology. Perfectly balanced without any adjustments like with the stock crank. I'll follow up with more pictures as the build progresses but it is really amazing. I did have serious rod bearing wear sometimes through 3-4+ layers. The car is at 44,000 miles, I had the oil changed with 10-60w BMW Castrol every 3,000 miles but it happened. Also I had a fair amount of carbon build up due to this issue. The bespoke crank assembly is designed with more clearance (similar to Ferrari motors that hit over 9,000 RPM at redline) so this issue will be corrected with the build. Also the heads and valves will be cleaned up with a slight port and polish. RD Sport inspects and fastidiously cleans every component and essentially when it's back together I will have a new motor. The race headers with race cats are currently being fabricated. The degree of professionalism, attention to detail, and technical knowledge of this engine and car by RD Sport is simply amazing. Nice guys too. Hopefully the block will be back next week and the assembly can begin. Stay tuned.

Can you go into more detail about your carbon build up? Are you saying it was due to your low oil change intervals?

Nice. Looking forward to the results. Is that Federico in the first pic?

Member gasterus had this done to his M6 back in 2009 but had a lot of issues. Haven't heard from him in a while so not sure how his car performed.
