Rattle is driving me nuts, please help!

Greetings to everyone,

First off, thank you for coming to my post. I have spent the past 2 days looking over previous posts and i cannot find any info that can assist.

I have had my car for just over a year, 2008 M5, 50k miles. For the past 5-6 months i have noticed a rattle only on significant acceleration. The noise has gotten worse, so much that my almost deaf girlfriend was able to hear it (she's not really deaf, she just loves to ignore me). The rattle goes away after i lift and does not return upon cruising at a stead speed. Cannot hear the rattle if my windows are up. Unfortunately I cannot pinpoint where the sound originates, however it seem like its coming directly from underneath the car. Has anyone experienced this? Any insight you can share? Its driving me nuts.

I have tried revving the engine in neutral, but there is no rattle. The sound only comes while i am driving. The car runs absolutely fine, no shakes, no thumps. I am taking the car in on Tuesday for service, while i am there i am going to ask my guy to see if he can determine the issue.

Thank you again for the help, i appreciate any info you can share.

Can you make/take and post a video clip of the offending rattle?

there is a tunnel on my way home, i'll take a video and share. You'll be able to get a good feel for the noise.

I have the exact same thing. Between 3k-4k rpm's mostly. Mine's been like that for years. Dealer has heard it and says that a lot of them do it. Really annoying though. Especially if you are driving by a wall or through a tunnel. Sounds like engine ping? That's how I describe it. Usually goes away after about 4.5k rpm. Doesn't do it at idle, only under load, and in 3rd and higher gears. If anyone has a solution, let us know.

sounds like a loose trim external, does it get worse as you accelerate, and only starts past a certain speed?

Oh. There is a thread on here somewhere, where the noise stopped after clutch replacement. Something to do with slipping clutch changing spark timing.

It gets louder as i accelerate and normally peeks between 3.5k - 5k, after that it goes away. Under normal acceleration and coasting on the highway, i don't hear it. The rattle is very metallic and does seem to come from under the car. I have tried to look for any loose parts, but haven't found anything. I am having the brake fluid changed on Tuesday, i asked my mechanic to see if he can spot anything while the car is on the lift.

Long shot but... I get a rattle under hard acceleration from what I thought was the right side of the centre console. However, someone suggested that it could be the metal wind breaker from the sun roof (the metal flap that folds down when the roof is closed) and at least in my case it was the problem. Some well-placed window insulation strip cured the vibration.

Thanks rassi! i'm not sure if that is culprit, but i'll double check, to be sure.
